JOB SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the delivery of safe and effective patient-centered care in a variety of settings based on education, knowledge, skill set, and competency. The Registered Nurse communicates with physicians/managers/co-workers, as appropriate, about changes in the patient's clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in the departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres to professional guidelines for practice such as defined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice.

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy and specific to unit age specific populations.
  • Ability to formulate and revise an individualized plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment. Evaluates the overall daily plan for effectiveness.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques, including non-pharmacological techniques. Includes the patient and family in all aspects of pain management through ongoing education about pain, assessment, treatment and common barriers to adequate management.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practice.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly with all health care team members.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
  • Provides care appropriate to the disease condition and age of the patient.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient/family complaints, and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner.

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Functions as liaison between the patient/family, physicians, other healthcare providers and administration.
  • Interacts professionally with the patient/family and involves the patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with the social service/discharge planner regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.

Department Key Responsibilities:
Summary: Provides direct and indirect professional nursing care for patients in the Pediatric Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Medical Surgical Unit, Women's Health, Emergency Department, Behavioral Health Unit, Transitional Care Unit, and any other area assigned. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs. Communicates with physicians about changes in a patient's clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring. Correctly identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS and PALS protocols.
  • Required to work in each area, but if high demand is in a specific area, that will be the balance. The Pediatric Unit is a top priority. House Supervisors will determine daily needs.
  • Able to provide basic airway management utilizing oral and nasal airways, ambu bag, jaw thrust or head tilt/chin lift maneuvers, and suctioning for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Functions competently during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Provides care to patients with compromised nutritional/metabolic status.
  • Provides care to patients requiring extensive fluid and electrolyte management.
  • Able to assess and care for patients in the immediate post-anesthesia period.
  • Able to function independently by using critical thinking skills to assess and intervene in critical situations until a physician is on site.
  • Maintains department competencies

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education / Experience License and Certification
  • Current unrestricted Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • BLS certification required.
  • An Associate degree in Nursing required. BSN, preferred.
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment.
  • A minimum of two years of inpatient nursing is required.

Department Specific Education / Experience / License and Certifications
  • ACLS certification, required.
  • ENPC or PALS certification required.
  • TNCC certification, required within one year of the position start date.
  • De-escalation training within 60 days of the start date, is required.
  • NRP certification, required within 6 months of hire.
  • If employee has completed the required certification(s) prior to hire/rehire that have lapsed, then completion of certification renewal during the department/position orientation period or completion of the next available certification course will meet this requirement.
