Job description

Overview
The Lead Ice Rink Supervisor oversees part-time staff and ensures clear communication, effective performance, and accountability across all operational roles, including skate guards, reception, and janitorial teams. This role maintains a safe working environment by proactively addressing hazards, reporting concerns, and enforcing safety standards while providing ongoing supervision and corrective guidance during shifts. The supervisor leads all ice operations for UMass Hockey games, including staff training, game-day logistics, and ice maintenance execution, with the ability to independently manage operations in the absence of the Ice Rink Director. Responsibilities also include maintaining high-quality ice conditions, overseeing equipment upkeep (such as Zamboni and edger maintenance), tracking inventory, and documenting all maintenance activities. Additionally, the position supports facility operations through janitorial duties, emergency repairs, staff training programs, and consistent communication with leadership, while maintaining flexibility for weekend shifts, extended game-day hours, and on-call coverage.
This position will report to the Ice Rink Director. The Lead Ice Rink Supervisor will also supervise other non-supervisory part-time staff. Weekend availability is a requirement.
This role will pay an hourly rate of $20.00-22.00

Responsibilities
  • Supervises other part-time staff. Communicate clearly and effectively to other part-time staff to ensure their effective in their duties
    • Continuously provide supervision and initiates corrective actions directed to other staff during shifts: skate guards, skate room attendants, receptionists, and janitorial staff.
    • Ensure a safe working environment for all staff. Reports any unsafe building conditions or situations immediately to proper channels.
    • Reports any dereliction of duties or unsafe working conditions to the Ice Rink Director.
  • Supervises UMass Hockey games. Leads ice maintenance and ice crew operations for all UMass Hockey games:
    • Provides training (sometime son the fly), gives corrective action for all other part-time Operations crew and Ice Crew working the UMass Hockey games.
    • Understands all facets and logistical requirements for game day operations and can keep to a strick timeline schedule.
    • Will be able to fully conduct gameday ice operations without the presence of the Ice Rink Director during a game.
  • Responsible for maintaining the highest level of ice quality and possible in the Community Ice Rink and Mullins Center Arena.
    • Ice maintenance times will be dictated outside of the event schedule and facility guidelines.
    • Oversee all aspects of ice maintenance and ice making equipment in the Mullins Center Community Ice Rink and Mullins Center Arena.
    • Perform and execute ice maintenance using advanced knowledge and techniques.
  • Perform regular daily/weekly/monthly/annual Zamboni and Edger maintenance, including, but not limited to:
    • Weekly blades changes, Greasing, Tire Pressure Checks, Engine oil changes, Tire changes, Cleaning, etc.
    • Maintain logs and documentation of all performed ice and equipment maintenance.
    • Keep an inventory of regular wear/ regular use items like: Zam blades, edger blades, engine oil, edger gas, and propane.
    • Assist with emergency repairs to ice rink equipment to ensure the success of all scheduled events.
  • Coordinates a Zamboni Driver training program for other drivers and completes driver testing, and re-testing (if needed).
  • Give a daily status report and feedback to Ice Rink Director during their shift.
  • Works 20-30 hours a week.
    • Works weekend shifts as assigned by the Ice Rink Director.
    • Will work long hours on UMass Hockey game days.
    • Is willing to cover Zamboni driver shifts on an emergency on-call basis, when able.
  • Learn and demonstrate knowledge in all building related materials, equipment, and procedures.
  • Pro-actively attempts in-house repairs safely and maintains the building and it's equipment to the extent of their knowledge and means.
  • Understands OSHA regulations and exhibits basic safety knowledge.
  • Perform janitorial duties as needed, maintains cleanliness of the Community Ice Rink at all times.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Requirements: 2-3 years of Ice Rink and Ice Maintenance related work.
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or related trade school training.
  • Valid driver's license to operate Zamboni.
  • Basic knowledge of general hand tools necessary to perform ice maintenance and ice rink repairs.
  • Be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and supplies on a regular basis.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule (Weekends required), work extra hours as needed; and work in varying weather conditions.
