Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
Our Health Information Technology program prepares students for success in the rapidly growing healthcare industry through practical training, real-world application, career-ready skills, and an industry-aligned curriculum. We are seeking an experienced Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) professional with a passion for preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to teach online courses in our accelerated Health Information Technology program. Prepare students for immediate employment by delivering applied instruction focused on current healthcare practices, health information systems, regulatory compliance, and employer needs.
Teach courses in our Health Information Technology program, helping students develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage health information, support healthcare operations, and ensure the accuracy, privacy, and security of patient data. Courses may include Health Information Systems, Medical Terminology, Health Data Content and Structure, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Information, Health Care Delivery Systems, Coding and Reimbursement Methodologies, Advanced Medical Coding, Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement, RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) Competency Review, and related Health Information Technology courses, depending on the selected candidate's expertise and program needs. This is a part-time online position, ideal for working health information professionals who want to share their expertise and experience with future Health Information Technology professionals.
Educational Requirements for the Position
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, Health Administration, Healthcare Informatics, or a closely related field. Master's degree strongly preferred. Current RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) credential preferred. Additional industry certifications (e.g., CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CHDA, CHPS, CDIP) are desirable depending on the candidate's area of expertise.
Experience Required for the Position
Professional experience in Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, medical coding, clinical documentation improvement, healthcare compliance, health data analytics, electronic health record systems, or a related healthcare field. Previous teaching or training experience is preferred. Strong commitment to the mission of the SHSU Polytechnic College. Demonstrated knowledge of health information management principles, healthcare regulations, coding systems, electronic health records, privacy and security standards, and healthcare reimbursement. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Experience with online learning platforms (e.g., Blackboard) is preferred.
Other Requirements for the Position
Preferred qualifications include familiarity with, or willingness to adopt, best practices for online teaching and learning, including the effective use of Blackboard. Demonstrated commitment to quality instruction, student success, career readiness, and workforce development. Ability to integrate current healthcare technologies and industry practices into instruction. Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, healthcare partners, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; analyze information, solve problems, and present complex healthcare concepts in an accessible manner. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a student-centered, customer-service-oriented environment. Applicants must be able to demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English.
