Job Title: Part-Time Weekend/Holiday Coverage Attorney

Location: Tampa, FL

Employment Type: Part-Time (3/4th Employee Status)

Schedule: Saturdays, Sundays, and all Court Holidays

Hours: Typically, 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Position Overview:

The Law Offices of Lisa B. McLean, Public Defender 13th Judicial Circuit in and for Hillsborough County Florida is seeking a dedicated and motivated attorney to join our Weekend/Holiday Intake Division Team.  This part-time position is ideal for an attorney who is passionate about public defense and is looking to contribute to our office's mission by ensuring clients receive representation during non-standard court hours. The attorney will assist our clients with various legal matters, including but not limited to collecting necessary paperwork for all clients appearing on that dayโ€™s docket, assisting with First Appearance Court, and assisting with Juvenile Detention Hearings. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in court during weekends and all court approved holidays.
  • Provide legal counsel and advice to clients on weekends and all court approved holidays.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure comprehensive legal representation for clients.
  • Ensure the proper collection of an Affidavit of Indigency Screening and an Invocation of Rights Form for each client appearing on the docket.
  • Ensure the proper collection of contact information and bond factors for each client on the docket.
  • Review all Criminal Report Affidavits and prepare/make any appropriate probable cause arguments.
  • Conduct legal research and remain updated on relevant laws and regulations.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with clients, colleagues, and court personnel.
  • Ensure all legal and ethical obligations are met in all representations.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Membership in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • Previous experience in criminal defense or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make quick, informed decisions under pressure.
  • Commitment to public defense and the mission of the Public Defender's Office.
