Position Summary:
SUNY Ulster County Community College, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for a Professional Writing Tutor in our Literacy Lab to begin in August 2026.
SUNY Ulster is seeking a part-time tutor to work one-on-one with students in the Literacy Lab to bridge gaps in comprehension and writing. The tutor will assist and encourage students throughout the learning processes, reviewing materials used in classes, explaining various topics, and addressing any questions regarding the topics covered in class.
This is a part-time position consisting of no more than 17.5 hours per week. The hours will be agreed upon by both the supervisor and employee at the onset of employment and are subject to change based on enrollment in courses.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct tutoring sessions outside of the class each week.
  • Communicate frequently with instructors and provide them with updates regarding the students' progress and feedback regarding the tutoring sessions.
  • Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
  • Use designated SUNY Ulster employee email address as primary method of communication and check that email once a day.
  • Complete and submit paperwork (Daily Logs, Time Sheets, etc.) in a timely manner.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other tutorial services and activities, as required.
  • Maintain appropriate ethical and professional conduct while working with students, staff, and faculty and demonstrate respect for the diversity of staff, students, and faculty.
  • Follow departmental compliance with established Student and Academic Affairs policies and procedures, and the rules and regulations defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least two years of experience teaching or tutoring English, preferably at the post-secondary level.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in English, Education, or Linguistics.
  • Strong written and oral English language skills
  • Experience working with second-language learners and sensitivity to their distinct needs preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Banner and/or Dynamic Forms

Salary:
An initial starting hourly rate of $23.21. This position is contingent upon adequate funding.
Additional Information
Part-time, non- benefited OPAP-covered members receive, on an annual basis: 16 hours of sick leave after two years of service, bereavement leave, and additional compensation for shifts worked on holidays. In addition, the College is closed on the day prior to Thanksgiving, and December 26th through December 31st, known as the Holiday Curtailment. SUNY Ulster offers optional participation in the New York State and Local Retirement System, and SUNY Perks.
