Job description

Interim CFO - Nonprofit Organization
Part-Time | 20 Hours per Week | Interim/Contract
Remote - with occassional in office presence

Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide executive-level financial leadership during a period of transition.
This is an opportunity for an accomplished nonprofit finance executive who can quickly assess the organization's financial position, identify priorities and risks, strengthen financial operations, and provide trusted guidance to executive leadership and the Board.
The ideal candidate is both strategic and hands-on-someone who can confidently advise senior leadership while also diving into the details when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide interim financial leadership and oversight for the organization
  • Assess current financial operations, reporting, controls, processes, and staffing
  • Partner with the CEO/Executive Director and senior leadership on financial strategy and decision-making
  • Prepare and present financial information, analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board/Finance Committee
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and financial planning
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Oversee restricted funds, grants, and other nonprofit-specific accounting requirements
  • Support the annual audit and ensure appropriate internal controls and compliance
  • Evaluate and improve financial processes, systems, and reporting
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities and develop practical recommendations
  • Assess the effectiveness of the existing finance function and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Work collaboratively with finance staff and provide leadership, direction, and mentorship
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor during the interim period and help ensure continuity through the transition
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including CFO, VP Finance, Controller, or comparable senior-level experience
  • Significant nonprofit accounting and finance experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with nonprofit financial statements, budgets, audits, grants, restricted funds, and Board reporting
  • Strong hands-on experience with Sage Intacct is required
  • Advanced understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
  • Experience with financial forecasting, cash-flow management, budgeting, and internal controls
  • Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership and/or Boards
  • Strong Excel and financial analysis skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
