What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Microbiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Microbiologist, you need a background in microbiology or a related field, often with at least a bachelor's degree and laboratory experience. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety protocols, and data analysis software such as PCR machines, spectrophotometers, and LIMS is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication enable you to ensure accurate results and collaborate on research or diagnostics. These abilities are crucial for maintaining scientific integrity and contributing meaningful insights within limited work hours.

What is a part time microbiologist?

A part time microbiologist is a scientific professional who studies microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and algae, but works fewer hours than a full-time position, typically on a flexible or reduced schedule. They may conduct laboratory tests, analyze samples, and assist in research projects in various industries, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food safety, or environmental science. Part time roles are ideal for those seeking work-life balance, students, or professionals wanting to supplement their experience while managing other commitments. Their responsibilities are similar to full-time microbiologists, but their workload and hours are adjusted according to their part-time status.

How does working as a part-time microbiologist typically impact project involvement and collaboration with full-time team members?

As a part-time microbiologist, you may work on specific segments of research or diagnostic projects, often focusing on tasks that can be accomplished within your scheduled hours. Effective communication with full-time colleagues is essential to ensure continuity, as you might hand off experiments or data analysis for others to complete. Many labs facilitate collaboration through shared digital platforms, regular team meetings, and detailed documentation. While you may not be involved in every phase of a project, your specialized expertise is valued and you’ll often contribute to critical stages, such as sample preparation, data interpretation, or quality assurance.

Part-Time Microbiologist - American Analytical (AATLS)
Location: On-site 9030 S Rita Road, Suite 320, Tucson, AZ 85747
Status / hours: Part-time, ~16-24 hrs/week (set to your need)
Compensation: $28-$34/hr
Schedule:
Flexible weekday shifts; note that Legionella culture read days require consistent on-site presence (serial reads through day 10).
About us
American Analytical (American Analytical Testing Laboratory Services / Black Labs, LLC) is a Tucson-based, ISO/IEC
17025:2017-accredited (ANAB AT-3321) and CDC ELITE environmental testing laboratory, and a Service-Disabled
Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). We serve healthcare facilities, government and tribal health systems, and
manufacturers - with deep focus on Legionella and water-compliance microbiology, AAMI ST108 critical water for sterile
processing and dialysis, and a growing cosmetics microbiology program.
The role
We're hiring a part-time Microbiologist to support our growing microbiology bench - performing accredited
environmental and cosmetic microbiology testing, upholding ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards, and providing capacity for
peak workloads and scheduled bench coverage. This is a hands-on, on-site role, ideal for a detail-oriented microbiologist
who wants flexible part-time hours in a small, mission-driven accredited lab.
What you'll do
Perform Legionella culture testing per ISO 11731:2017 / CDC ELITE procedures - sample processing, plating, serial incubation reads through day 10, confirmation, and reporting.
Run heterotrophic plate count (SM 9215), total coliform & E. coli (SM 9223B), and related potable / non-potable water microbiology.
Support AAMI ST108 critical water and endotoxin (LAL) testing for sterile processing and dialysis water.
Contribute to the cosmetics microbiology program - microbial limits / USP <61>/<62>/<51> and Aerobic Plate Count (AOAC OMA 2015.13) on personal-care products - and environmental swab / clean-room monitoring.
Prepare and QC culture media, reagents, and controls; maintain rigorous aseptic technique.
Keep strict chain-of-custody and complete ISO/IEC 17025 documentation - bench sheets, QC records, traceability, and result entry in the LIMS.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain microbiology equipment (incubators, biosafety cabinet, autoclave, microscope); log maintenance.
Follow lab safety, biohazard, and waste-handling protocols.
Support method verification and proficiency testing (e.g., CDC ELITE panels) as needed.
Promptly flag nonconformances or out-of-specification results to the Laboratory Director.
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (ANAB AT-3321) CDC ELITE SDVOSB
Analytical Testing Laboratory Tucson, Arizona
What you bring
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
2+ year of laboratory microbiology experience (academic, clinical, environmental, food, pharma, or cosmetics).
Strong aseptic technique; proficiency in plating, culturing, and microbial enumeration/identification.
Meticulous documentation habits and comfort with detailed recordkeeping.
Reliable and able to commit to a consistent part-time schedule, including fixed culture-read days.
Able to work on-site in Tucson; authorized to work in the U.S. Nice to have (not required)
Experience in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory.
Legionella / CDC ELITE experience (ISO 11731 or CDC procedure).
Water-compliance, AAMI ST108, or USP cosmetic microbial-limits experience.
QMS, LIMS experience; ASCP / NRCM or similar certification.
Physical requirements
Stand for extended periods and perform fine-motor bench work; lift up to ~25 lbs.
Comfortable handling environmental and biological samples under biosafety protocols.
Why join
Flexible part-time hours in a small, collaborative, veteran-owned accredited lab.
Hands-on work across a rare credential stack (ISO 17025 + CDC ELITE) and multiple disciplines - water, healthcare, and cosmetics.
Direct mentorship from the Laboratory Director and real ownership of your bench.
