Adjunct Faculty, Communication and Media Studies

The Department of Communication and Media Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College invites applications for adjunct faculty to join an ongoing pool of qualified instructors.  Our primary need is for faculty who can teach Introduction to Public Speaking, a core first-year general education course required for all undergraduate students.  Qualified candidates may have the opportunity to teach courses that serve the department's communication curriculum.
Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree in Communication. Previous college-level teaching experience is preferred. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, student mentorship, and collaborative engagement within the department.
These are part-time, course-by-course teaching opportunities intended to establish a pool of qualified candidates for future instructional needs. Teaching assignments vary by semester based on departmental needs, funding, and enrollment, and qualified applicants may be contacted as opportunities arise.
Founded in 1861, North Central College is a nationally recognized liberal arts institution serving approximately 3,000 students. Located in Naperville, Illinois, just west of Chicago, the College offers the advantages of a vibrant suburban community with convenient access to the city via the nearby Metra station. North Central continues to grow and invest in its campus, including the addition of a $60 million Science Center and a state-of-the-art Health Sciences and Engineering building.
Expectations
  • Hold courses as scheduled in person on campus.
  • Assess student work and provide constructive and timely feedback on how to improve students' content knowledge, critical thinking skills, research abilities, and oral and written communication skills, etc. 
  • Mentor first-year undergraduate students to successfully acclimate to the College.
  • Build, maintain and keep current course Canvas sites.
  • Hold regular weekly office hours.
  • Attend College workshops and professional development opportunities related to teaching public speaking and the first-year curriculum (stipend supported)
