Job description

Teacher Tutors is hiring a part-time Middle School Math Tutor to join our team on a flexible basis. This role is ideal for warm, upbeat tutors who love math and know how to make it feel approachable for this age group. Supporting students in grades 6 through 8 in their math coursework, from middle school math through pre-algebra and Algebra 1.
You'll work with students across a range of levels and goals: grade-level middle school math, pre-algebra, and Algebra 1 for accelerated or advanced students. Sessions take place in students' homes or at our Livingston, NJ office. This is an in-person role, not an online-only position. We do our best to match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius. You tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver one-on-one tutoring sessions tailored to each student's course, teacher's expectations, and learning goals.
  • Plan lessons and prepare materials (problem sets, skill drills, word-problem walkthroughs, and homework and test support keyed to what students are covering in class).
  • Build students' fluency with core middle school math and algebra skills (fractions, ratios and proportions, integers and rational numbers, expressions and equations, the coordinate plane, exponents, and the transition into linear equations, factoring, and functions in Algebra 1) and their ability to move between verbal, numerical, algebraic, and graphical representations of the same concept.
  • Bring warmth and positive energy to every session, helping students who may feel anxious or discouraged about math feel capable and engaged.
  • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
  • Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
  • Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree, with strong math coursework or a math-related field. A degree in mathematics, math education, or a quantitative field is a plus, as is teaching certification. Master's or PhD candidates are welcome.
  • Demonstrated command of middle school math through Algebra 1, with the confidence to support accelerated students.
  • Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience (formal or informal) with elementary, middle, or high school students.
  • A warm, upbeat, and patient presence that puts students at ease and keeps them engaged. This is the heart of the role.
  • Genuine enjoyment of working with middle schoolers and an understanding of what this age group needs, both academically and emotionally.
  • Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, distracted, or low on confidence about math.
  • Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
  • Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around midterms and finals.
  • Comfort with educational technology.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions.

Preferred
  • Experience helping middle schoolers build confidence and independence in math, not just raise grades
  • Ability to diagnose and close the arithmetic and pre-algebra gaps that most often hold students back as they move toward algebra
  • Experience supporting the transition from middle school math into Algebra 1 and beyond
  • Familiarity with the New Jersey middle school math sequence and how it prepares students for high school placement
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve)

Benefits
Compensation & employment status
  • Pay range: $40-$50/hour, based on degree and experience
  • W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions.
  • 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.

Coverage area
We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range.
