Required Education:
  • Two (2) years of Post-secondary education or equivalent with course work or training in sign language and interpreting for the deaf or hard of hearing.

Required Experience:
  • Experience as a sign interpreter, both one-on-one and before audiences (practicum work may be considered)
  • Fluent ASL and English language skills and ability to accurately interpret and convey higher-level educational content and concepts.
  • Experience working on issues of access and inclusion to effect meaningful change and promote student success.

Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Oregon Licensure: Provisional, Supervisory, or Generalist Sign Language Interpreter

Position Purpose:
An ASL interpreter is responsible for providing sign language interpreting/transliterating services to LCC students and community. This position is integral to ensuring institutional compliance with ADA and Section 504 regulations.
Essential Functions:
  • Provides in-class interpretation and transliteration services using sign language communication for deaf and hard of hearing students in college classes, laboratories, and student events and activities that may require presentation and exchange of highly complex and technical information.
  • Uses sign language to transmit information from a lecture, film, videotape or small group.
  • Assesses consumer language needs to determine optimal language equivalence.
  • Research new signs used by deaf signers to communicate new and changing information related to computers, geography, etc.
  • Assists in developing technical signs as needed by students.
  • Stays abreast of new developments and techniques in the field of sign language interpretation.
  • Uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions; understands and utilizes technology as communication and data gathering tools.
  • Demonstrable ability to understand, effectively collaborate with, and interpret for a variety of students, staff and faculty, and interact with people from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the overall policy guidance of the supervisor. A Project Coordinator may assign tasks, provides priorities and is available to answer questions and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Work is performed independently according to local, state and federal regulations, applicable laws, College policies, program guidelines, and the Code of Ethics for interpreters.
Work is reviewed for overall results achieved through feedback from students and clients.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors under a normal office working environment and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. This position may work with individuals who may be in crisis, have difficulty tracking, or in need of mental health support. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.   • Ability to utilize a wide range of sign language systems (i.e. ASL, PSE, ProTactile ASL).
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first-generation, students with disabilities, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
  • Working knowledge of ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Knowledge of universal/inclusive design concepts and experience with implementation.
  • Ability to adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and create effective relationships for problem-solving and positive interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students and employees.
  • High-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
  • Ability to stay abreast of new developments and techniques n the interpretation field and maintain licensure.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
