Job description

Purpose of Position:

In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, the incumbent will provide sports officiating, instruction, supervision, and support for members, participants and guardians of the YMCA sports programs. Incumbent will work together with coaches, staff and other officials to assure that the sports program promotes the YMCA Mission Statement and perform job duties while exemplifying the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Officiate team sports at the YMCA or off-site locations.
  2. Teach the knowledge of the multiple sports to adults.
  3. Assume responsibility for interpreting the rules, policies and traditions of the game to the sport participants.
  4. Demonstrate sound judgments and call an accurate and consistent game.
  5. Fulfills the mission, vision and values of the YMCA through excellent customer service, creative problem solving, decision-making and stewardship of YMCA resources.

Essential Functions of the Job:
  1. Demonstrates emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationship skills in day-to-day work, decision-making, and problem solving.
  2. Suggests and carries out procedures to assure the highest standards of risk and hazard management, prevention; and participant and employee safety, reporting all issues to the Sports Director.
  3. Team player that can relate positively to all staff, volunteers and participants
  4. Observe participant and fan behavior and respond verbally to health and safety concerns and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior.
  5. Organize and manage sport set up, clean up and participate in activities necessary to deliver a quality sports experience.
  6. Serve as a good example in personal language, appearance and health habits.
  7. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the supervisor, department head, YMCA employees and members.
  8. Prepare routine administrative paperwork including timesheet and assigned human resources forms.
  9. Follow and enforce all established YMCA rules and regulations.
  10. Adjust and operate all sports equipment as applicable including but not limited to baskets, goals, scoreboards, sound systems and any other operation that will contribute to the success of the sports game and league.
  11. Contributes to a superior work culture through participation in training and staff meetings to develop leadership, management and technical skills related to camp.
  12. Assist in promoting YMCA programs and services including World Service, United Way, Partner Campaign and related events.
  13. Stay current with applicable sport rules and regulations.
  14. Show enthusiasm about officiating and teaching the knowledge of the game.
  15. Must be able to move into correct position to see plays on the playing field or court.
  16. Deal effectively with a diversity of individuals.
  17. Assumes all other duties and assignments deemed appropriate by the Sports Director.
  18. Perform all duties while exemplifying the "Y" values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
