Artforum: Part-Time Articles Editor
Artforum, the magazine of record for the contemporary art industry, is hiring a part-time Articles Editor to work 16 hours per week who is responsible for serving as a primary editor for columns and features across web and print. In addition to commissioning and editing short- and long-form content from staff and freelance contributors, the part-time Articles Editor will contribute to both the print magazine and web platforms (including columns, features, interviews, reviews, or other content) on a regular basis.
Artforum values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite in our NYC office with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assigning and editing features and columns across print and web
  • Identifying potential contributors and story ideas
  • Cultivating a network of contributing writers and artists
  • Regularly contributing editorial content to print and web
  • Uploading web content to WordPress, using SEO best practices to draft titles, alt text, and SEO titles and descriptions.
  • Serving as an ambassador for the magazine at art world events, including press previews, openings, and art fairs.

REQUIREMENTS
The part-time Articles Editor is expected to be an exemplary editor and writer, with demonstrable knowledge of art history and contemporary art. Finely-honed editorial instincts, a flair for diplomacy, clear communication skills, an appreciation for different writerly voices/modes, punctuality with deadlines, and an ability to multi-task are imperative.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Some formal training in art history
  • Four or more years of experience editing texts
  • Some record of publications on contemporary art
  • Proficiency with standard business software programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Zoom; if not familiar with publishing on WordPress, must be willing to learn
  • Submission via the PMC careers portal of both a cover letter and résumé is required for consideration.

DUTIES
COMMISSIONING
  • Contribute ideas and feedback in weekly meetings with the entire editorial team
  • Regularly correspond with writers to commission pieces or field pitches, communicating on details such as scope, proposed argument, word count, deadline, and fee

EDITING
  • Edit columns and features, with emphasis on improving the relevance, clarity, and incisiveness of the argument
  • Collate and adjudicate additional proposed edits from the top editors, fact checkers, and copy editors
  • Communicate and negotiate any proposed edits with the writers
  • Upload web columns to WordPress, including gathering images/captions, writing alt-text descriptions, and following SEO best practices.

WRITING
  • Contribute original content (including columns, features, reviews, and other content) to our print or web platforms on a regular basis as assigned and/or pitched

AMBASSADORSHIP
  • Cultivate and maintain a network of freelance writers
  • Regularly attend press previews, art openings, fairs, and other events on behalf of the magazine

ADDITIONAL DUTIES, AS ASSIGNED
  • Drafting copy for social media and newsletters
