Job Description: Processing Assistant (PT)

Department: Library

Date: June 17, 2026

Schedule: 17.5 hours per week; requires one Saturday per month and some
evenings.

Summary


Under the supervision of the Technical Services Librarian, the Processing Assistant splits their time between behind-the-scenes material preparation and public-facing service. This role is responsible for physically processing new library acquisitions and performing standard front-desk circulation duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical services and processing tasks include preparing new books, media, and materials for circulation by applying labels, protective jackets, barcodes to books and other materials according to library standards. Assist with minor material repairs and withdrawals.
  • Circulation desk support includes performing standard Library Assistant duties, including check-ins, check-outs, holds, and managing museum pass reservations.
  • Direct patron service includes answering phone inquiries, assisting patrons with account questions, and providing a welcoming, positive experience at the service desk.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and complexity as directed to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the library.


Required Background & Qualifications


  • High School diploma (or equivalent) with two years of similar library experience; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a patient, welcoming demeanor and a commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Solid computer literacy, with the ability to learn new systems quickly (direct experience with the Evergreen ILS is a strong plus).
  • Proven ability to multi-task, stay organized, and remain flexible in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, bend, reach, stand for extended periods, and safely move a fully loaded library truck/cart throughout the building.
