Job description

Pay Rate: $30.00/hour I Hours: 15 hours per week I Supervisor: Director of Educational Services I Location: York City School District I Classification: Part-Time/Contingent/non-exempt I Schedule: Must have availability to work Monday through Friday except for parent-teacher conference days and 6 designated early dismissal days; will work either 3 days per week at 5 hours per workday or 5 days per week at 3 hours per workday, depending upon the needs of the assigned school. Also includes 5 designated days of professional development.
For the 2026-2027 school year, the program runs from August 2026, through the end of May 2027. (Not to exceed 174 days of instruction).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Reading Specialist works with kindergarten through eighth grade students in small groups to improve their reading skills. The goal is to help those struggling below their grade level to increase their literacy to grade level or above.
Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in education (or a related degree)
  • Must have a PA Reading Specialist Certificate
  • Knowledge or experience in best practice literacy concepts
  • Candidate must have current (within 1 year) PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Clearance, Act 168 Clearance (if applicable), and Mandated Reporter Training Certificate.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must enjoy being a team player and providing excellent care and service to a diverse population. The candidate should have the ability to interact with staff, families and students in a manner that demonstrates respect and dignity, and the ability to solve problems in a professional manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to bend, squat, and kneel occasionally.
  • Must be able to reach, lift, and stretch throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk up to four hours at a time.
  • Must be able to sit for up to four hours at a time

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under the direction and guidance of the Director of Educational Services and the classroom teacher, the Reading Specialist has the following duties:
  • Instruct small group literacy lessons with students.
  • Assist teacher in presentation of the grade level curriculum.
  • Keep accurate records of all student and parent contacts.
  • Provide support for emotional needs of students.
  • Collect, analyze, and maintain accurate records of student progress using screening (DIBELS, Progress monitoring, etc.) and formative assessments.
  • Assist with individual assessment of students.
  • Attend workshops or professional development in best practices in literacy.

Salary Description
$30.00/hour
