Job description

Why This Role is Valuable The purpose of this position is to maintain the City's animal shelter and the animals housed in the shelter. This position is responsible for performing routine animal and related duties including: maintaining and cleaning kennel areas, caring for and socializing animals, assisting with and performing euthanasia, monitoring and assisting the front desk, assisting the public, and interfacing with other City employees, volunteers, and citizens. Additionally, this position may provide direction to other employees and volunteers.

Applicants must be able to work efficiently in a fast passed environment and have the ability to multi-task. This is a part time position, working approximately 20 hours per week, including weekends and holidays, as needed. How You Add Value Maintains shelter by cleaning animal cages, sweeping and mopping floors, loading and unloading food and cat litter, removing trash, maintaining and cleaning equipment and cleaning the bathrooms.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds and any weight above 50 pounds requires a two person lift. Cares for animals by feeding and watering animals, exercising and bathing animals, performing vaccinations, assisting in the impounding of animals and performing or assisting in euthanizing animals. Must be able to hold animals and restrain on a leash.

Provides premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner. Monitors the front desk by answering inquiries over the telephone or in person, collecting fees, preparing and maintaining records, receiving paperwork and entering information into computer. Assists the public by performing adoption procedures and assisting in reclaiming lost animals.

Monitors the health of animals by examining and screening animals for illness and disease. Evaluate animals for adoption and euthanasia. Regular attendance required, that includes opening, closing, weekends, rotating shifts and holidays, as needed .

Must be available to be called in if necessary. What You Bring to the Role No experience required, however, preference will be given to candidates with experience handing both wild and domesticated animals. Preference may also be given to candidates that are bilingual in English/Spanish and/or candidates with surgical tech experience.

High school diploma or GED required. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age. Intermediate knowledge of computer programs including experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook, internet usage, and the ability to accurately and efficiently type documents is preferred.

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Must pass a physical ability test.
