Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for the direct provision of library services to children (birth through age 12) and adults working on behalf of children; planning, presenting, evaluating developmentally appropriate library programming; advising and assisting children in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources; conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools and child care settings; actively promoting children's use of the library and library resources; advocating for children within the library organization. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.
This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Hours
This position requires a flexible schedule, including availability for evenings, and weekends.
Essential Job Functions
  • Assists the general public with information regarding library materials and equipment.
  • Participates in library committee work.
  • Maintains and selects library materials on the basis of established criteria and the needs of the users.
  • Promotes use of the library by the community.
  • Answers reference questions and performs readers' advisory services.
  • Prepares and presents programs regarding library services and materials to various age groups.
  • Maintains work records and prepares reports.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and selects materials.
  • Prepares original cataloging copy for non-specialized materials.
  • Solves routine classification and cataloging problems.
  • Reconciles differences in bibliographic records.
  • Trains staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • No substitution for education allowed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Passion for and desire to work with children (0 to 12 years) in a public library setting.
  • Experience fostering and facilitating parent and child participation in the development and implementation of children's library programming.
  • Experience conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools; advocating for children in the library organization and community.
  • A language proficiency, other than English.

Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
