How does working in a part-time legal role typically impact opportunities for professional development and career advancement?

In a part-time legal position, you may encounter fewer formal training programs or mentoring opportunities compared to full-time roles, but many firms still encourage skill development through project-based work and continuing legal education. Part-time legal professionals often work closely with senior attorneys, gaining exposure to a variety of cases, which can broaden your experience and network. While advancement to partnership or senior roles may be less common on a part-time schedule, consistent high performance and flexibility can lead to growth opportunities, especially in firms that value work-life balance. It's important to communicate your career goals with your employer to identify pathways for progression.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part-Time Legal Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part-Time Legal Assistant, you generally need a foundational understanding of legal terminology, document preparation, and office administration, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and document management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications help ensure efficient legal support, minimize errors, and contribute to the smooth functioning of legal teams.

What are part-time legal jobs?

Part-time legal jobs are positions within the legal field that require employees to work fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule, typically less than 35-40 hours per week. These roles can include positions such as paralegals, legal assistants, junior lawyers, or administrative staff in law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies. Part-time legal jobs offer flexibility for those balancing other commitments, such as education or family, while still providing valuable experience in the legal sector.

Are you looking to take another step into the world of business law? To work alongside a team and help attorneys create strategies that allow clients to achieve their goals? This may be the role for you.

Shaheen and Gordon, P.A. is looking for a skilled and personable Legal Assistant to support the Business Law practice in our Dover, NH office. The ideal candidate is a professional with 2-5 years of experience and will have flexibility to work on a part-time (minimum 24 hours) or full-time basis. The ideal candidate will also have the desire to further their career in the legal field, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

For this position, every day is different, but the goal is the always same: helping our clients to build businesses or find professional success in careful and informed ways. Some days, youโ€™ll be talking to the clients directly, and others, you might be poring over documents in meticulous detail or maintaining complex case files. No matter what the day brings, youโ€™ll be working closely with attorneys and taking on new challenges with an experienced, supportive team by your side.

About S&G: Shaheen and Gordon is a full-service law firm with a commitment to excellence and a focus on community. A fixture of the New Hampshire legal community for over 40 years, the firm has expanded across Northern New England and all the way to Hawaii. Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, Shaheen and Gordon offers the opportunity to build your career with a fast-growing company.

At Shaheen and Gordon, we live our brand: Itโ€™s different here. We take our work very seriously, but not ourselves. We take time to know each other. We care about our clients. We invest in our communities. We know that our employees make all the difference, and we treat them accordinglyโ€”every member of our firm has a voice and is encouraged to use it.

S&G offers excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible spending account, and 401(k) plan employer contribution. Our Dover office is located right in the heart of downtown and offers ample parking, an assortment of walkable lunch and coffee destinations, a break room full of snacks, and an in-office gym.

Between our Wellness and DEI committees, benefits and amenities, and openness to employee feedback, weโ€™re determined to do right by the people who make up our firm and excited to welcome the right person to our team to fill this role.

Responsibilities
  • Opening and closing client files
  • Coordinate conflict checks, prepare engagement letters, setting up and organizing client files in paper form and electronic format
  • Assist attorneys in preparing and organizing legal documents, correspondence and pleadings
  • Maintain accurate and updated case files electronically and paper, including filing and indexing
  • Communicate directly with clients, witnesses and other legal professionals
  • Manage calendars, deadlines and case timelines
  • Perform other functions as requested or needed or assigned
  • Requirements
  • 25 yearsโ€™ experience as a legal assistant/paralegal in a law firm environment
  • Applicable knowledge of motions, discovery, scheduling, deadlines, court rules and procedures in New Hampshire
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and client needs in a fastpaced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Teamoriented attitude with a passion for the production of highquality legal work for clients
  • Proficiency in standard computer software, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Experience with Filevine and LMS is preferred but not required
  • Shaheen and Gordon is an Equal Opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), gender identity or expression, national origin, citizenship, veteran status, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, marital status, sexual orientation, or any other consideration made unlawful by applicable federal, state or local laws in all aspects of employment, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, transfer, promotion, discipline, compensation, termination, and layoff.

Shaheen & Gordon presents a pleasant, supportive, challenging, non-smoking work environment. Salary commensurate with experience, with excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible spending account, and 401(k) plan employer match.
