Job description

Position: Translator

Reports To: Foster Care Supervisor

Status: Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION:

Responsible for assisting with needs of converting written or spoken material from one language to another while maintaining the original meaning, format, and tone.

INFORMATION PRIVACY AND SECURITY LEVEL:

In accord with federal and state legislative mandates, individuals employed in this position are trained to, and function within a Level II-B security clearance for confidentiality of client protected health information, and other privileged information. Appropriate sanctions will be applied against employees who fail to comply with the privacy policies and procedures of the Agency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in multiple languages required; preferred languages will be specified.
  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • At least three years of related experience required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and current insurance.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Fluency in and thorough understanding of the primary language(s) being translated.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills in the applicable languages.
  • Excellent listening skills and auditory recall to remember spoken words and to accurately reproduce them in the desired language.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to appropriately understand and respond to culturally sensitive situations, perspectives, and phrases.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in intense situations.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS REQURIED:

  • Ability to engage in daily, full-time attendance, and occasionally, in duties re­quiring longer than eight (8) consecutive hours as well as non-working hours.
  • Possess the ability to perform sitting, standing, and stooping in daily full-time employment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle during both day and night hours.
  • Excellent proficiency in handwriting and computer use, and in the use of clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have natural or corrected reasonably good vision and hearing, and the ability to use the telephone.
  • The ability to move physically about the Agency's owned buildings and grounds, and to use stairways (especially in emergencies).
  • Possess the ability to maintain calm efficiency and effectiveness in stressful and demanding situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 (fifteen) pounds.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carefully listens to or reads content including jargon and acronyms in the original language.
  • Understands and analyzes what is being said or written, and effectively and accurately translates the message, intent, and nuances being communicated.
  • Reproduces statements or questions in the desired output language.
  • Facilitates effective communication among individuals, agencies, courts, schools, or other interested parties.
  • Provides simultaneous interpretation (SI) or consecutive interpretation (CI) depending on the desired outcome.
  • Gathers, develops, and maintains lists of terminology and information that may be used in technical translations such as legal or medical materials.
  • Protects the confidentiality of information and adheres to any related ethical or professional codes.
  • All other duties as assigned.
