Job description

This is a part-time position, currently two days per week (Tuesday & Thursday, with other days up for discussion) at a non-profit organization. And understanding of non-profit work is a plus.

Grounds Management/Landscaping & Gardening and Building Maintenance & Repair experience REQUIRED - please do not apply without specific experience for the job description below.

Interested candidates should submit resume with experience and cover letter expressing reasons for the interest.

Management and upkeep of the grounds, buildings and fencing on a large property, including, but not limited to:
  • Snow plowing and shoveling.
  • Lawn mowing.
  • Weed whacking.
  • Landscaping.
  • Painting (MUST be a good, neat and clean painter).
  • Fence repairs.
  • Building repairs.
  • Minor construction (Construction experience a PLUS!).
  • Small orchard maintenance.
  • Small vineyard maintenance.
  • Winterizing buildings.
  • Tree maintenance and care.
  • Seasonal maintenance and preparations.
  • Stone wall maintenance.
  • Ongoing organization of storage sheds.
  • Repairing broken tools.
  • Picking up supplies or running errands when necessary.
  • Taking out trash, recyclables and compost.
  • Managing parking area when necessary.
  • Properly handling brush pile maintenance.

 The right candidate should know how to:
  • Understand and accept direction.
  • Drive a tractor (backhoe operation a plus).
  • Operate a zero-turn mower.
  • Operate a chain saw, all other saws, weed whacker and brush cutter.
  • Operate drills, use all basic tools like drill, hammer, shovels.
  • The right candidate will receive training on pond mechanics, running of the generator and other necessary functions.
  • Drive a long bed pick up and tow various types of trailers.
  • Electrical or plumbing knowledge a plus, though not necessary.
 
The right candidate should also enjoy working, want to work, and take pride in being productive in all kinds of weather. 

This position has responsibility over a few handy-people and gardeners that come a few hours a week.
The right candidate will also be able to manage and work alongside these assistants, coming up with and instructing on projects and overseeing their follow-through by checking their work and teaching when appropriate. You must also be competent enough to leave projects for your assistants on days you are not working. The ability to be an effective communicator is very important. **If you are not comfortable managing people effectively** this may not be the right position for you. 

This position will report to the executive director, however, the right candidate will be able to:
  • Operate independently and be productive without supervision.

  • Have strong communication and excellent listening skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to delegate tasks effectively.

  • Be reliable, and is healthy and physically capable of performing the duties of this position.
  • Have enough technological skills to use a digital tool for daily reporting and communicating.

Hours are 9 AM-5:30 PM with break between 1PM-1:30PM
and it is requested this position will arrive shortly before the rest of the staff to make sure there is no impediment from the rest of the staff driving in. Some flexibility will be required for days like snowy days when you will have to arrive early enough before staff to prep the parking area, or stay after hours to handle a late snow storm. Your hours on those days may shift to accommodate the situation.
