What is the difference between Part Time Insurance Verification vs Part Time Medical Billing?

AspectPart Time Insurance VerificationPart Time Medical Billing
CredentialsHigh school diploma, insurance verification trainingHigh school diploma, billing software knowledge
Work EnvironmentHealthcare offices, clinicsHealthcare offices, billing departments
Industry UsageInsurance verification for patient coverageProcessing and submitting claims, payments

Part Time Insurance Verification focuses on confirming patient insurance coverage, while Part Time Medical Billing involves submitting claims and managing payments. Both roles often work together in healthcare settings but have distinct responsibilities and skill sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Insurance Verification Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Insurance Verification Specialist, you need a solid understanding of insurance policies, attention to detail, and experience with medical terminology, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, insurance portals, and verification software is typically required. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask help you stand out in this position. These skills are essential for accurately verifying patient insurance coverage, preventing billing errors, and ensuring efficient workflow in healthcare settings.

What does a Part Time Insurance Verification specialist do?

A Part Time Insurance Verification specialist is responsible for confirming patients' insurance coverage and benefits before medical services are provided. They communicate with insurance companies, verify policy details, and ensure that procedures are authorized and covered. This helps prevent billing issues and ensures patients are informed about their financial responsibilities. Part time roles may involve working flexible hours or fewer shifts while still performing these essential administrative tasks.

What are some common challenges faced in a part-time insurance verification role and how can they be managed?

A common challenge in part-time insurance verification is keeping up with frequent changes in insurance policies and provider requirements, which can affect the accuracy of patient coverage information. Additionally, managing high call volumes or tight turnaround times may be demanding, especially when working reduced hours. Effective time management, strong attention to detail, and regular communication with both providers and colleagues help ensure verifications are completed accurately and efficiently. Employers often provide training and updated resources to help part-time staff stay current with changing guidelines.

Job description

Expanded Practice Dental Hygienist — Community Outreach

Capitol Dental | Salem, OR (Traveling Position)

$5,000 Signing Bonus | Part Time | A Different Kind of Hygiene Role

This isn't a chair-side position. If you're a hygienist who wants independence, community impact, and the chance to practice at the top of your license — this role was built for you.

Capitol Dental is hiring a Part Time Expanded Practice Dental Hygienist (EPDH) for our Community Outreach program in and around Salem, OR. You'll bring oral healthcare directly to patients in medical clinics, hospitals, and community settings — meeting people where they are, often when access to traditional dental care isn't an option.

Why Capitol Dental

Our vision is simple: provide exceptional, lifelong, integrated oral healthcare — and make it accessible to every patient, in every setting. We believe oral health is foundational to overall wellbeing, and that means reaching patients beyond the four walls of a traditional clinic.

We're a team of people who care, listen, and show up for our communities. We build meaningful relationships with our patients, our medical partners, and each other — and we're looking for a provider who shares that commitment.

What You'll Do

As a community outreach EPDH, you are a primary care provider — working independently across multiple community locations with a high level of clinical decision-making authority. Your scope includes:

  • Conducting assessments, intra-oral photos, x-rays, and all hygiene services independently
  • Collaborating with a tele-dentist via state-of-the-art telehealth technology for chart review, diagnosis, and restorative treatment planning
  • Prescribing antibiotics when necessary and with guidance from your collaborative dentist to help stabilize patients until they can be seen for restorative care
  • Coordinating referrals for restorative care with local dental providers
  • Scoop and fill procedures (training provided for those not yet certified)
  • Serving as the Oral Health Champion in your assigned community settings — educating patients, colleagues, and community stakeholders on the importance of oral health
  • Partnering with medical providers to integrate oral health into primary care
  • Managing your own schedule proactively, keeping access to care moving and patient flow on track
  • Handling administrative responsibilities including insurance verification and electronic health records (both dental and medical EHR platforms)
  • Community networking, outreach, and patient recruitment to grow your patient base

This role calls for an entrepreneurial mindset. You'll have the autonomy to own your schedule and patient base, and the accountability that comes with it.

What We Offer — Part Time Employees
  • ✍️ $5,000 signing bonus
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • ️ Basic Life, AD&D, and Long-Term Disability Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Continuing Education (CE) Credits
  • ⚕️ Malpractice Coverage
  • Referral Bonus Program ($600–$2,500 depending on role)
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Dental Hygiene program
  • Current Oregon Dental Hygiene License (or ability to obtain prior to start)
  • Oregon EPDH license required
  • CPR certification required
  • Local anesthesia certification required
  • Strong organizational, communication, and independent decision-making skills
  • Comfort with EHR systems and basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel)
  • An entrepreneurial, self-directed approach to patient care and scheduling
Ready to Make a Difference?

We're hiring immediately. If you're ready to take your career beyond the traditional clinical setting and bring care to patients who need it most — we'd love to hear from you.

  • High School or better
