Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets. 

Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

Bechtel are seeking personnel to join multiple existing and upcoming projects comprising copper/gold concentrators with associated ROM feed, ore handling, processing plant, tailings management facilities, and supporting infrastructure including water supply, power supply, maintenance facilities, offices, temporary and construction accommodation villages. 

Job Summary:

Bechtel is seeking a Senior Control Systems and Instrumentation (CS&I) Engineer for the Mining & Metals team, based in Brisbane, Australia. This role will be responsible for the design and specification of general instrumentation, valves and DCS/PLC based control systems. The role will provide CS&I engineering and design support to Bechtel projects seamlessly and with high quality.

You will be responsible for coordination of the production of technical drawings, calculations, specifications and material take-offs for a project’s design, procurement and constructability aspects. You will additionally be responsible for supporting and reviewing engineering developed by third party engineering service providers in contribution to the overall project scope.

As a senior control systems engineer you will facilitate technical discussions and design reviews, review vendor information, project and client design specifications and collaborating discipline design inputs. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure designs comply with all applicable regulations and standards.

This role will be responsible for the control systems and instrumentation design of surface infrastructure inclusive of all air, water, fuel and reagent utilities services, and overview of mining bulk handling and process plant design by external consultants.

Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s ROM to tailings mechanical requirements are met. 

This position is designated a part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project.  Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with function or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Material handling and process plant instrumentation design for small/medium/large size projects
  • Preparation, evaluation, and package engineering of Scope of Services for Plant Control Systems, Telecommunications and Instrumentation Packages for mining / processing plants.
  • Preparation of study reports, scopes of work, equipment specifications, functional specification and datasheets
  • Proposal preparation and cost estimates
  • Selection / specification of instrumentation in accordance with equipment datasheets
  • Design / modify panel layout, schematic wiring and termination diagrams for industrial control systems
  • Developing I&C schedules (cable, instrument, I/O, etc.)
  • Developing changeover plans for brownfield control system upgrades
  • PLC and Remote IO control system design
  • Design/layout of plant control rooms
  • Location/arrangement of DCS and other control cabinets within plant
  • Participate in design and hazard reviews
  • Review supplier documentation to ensure project specifications are satisfied
  • Mentors and assists junior instrumentation and control system engineers
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10 – 13 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with functional safety system and TUV certification is highly regarded.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • A degree in engineering, demonstrated experience and CPEng status and current RPEQ.
  • Demonstrated experience in Control System/Instrumentation Engineering
  • Excellent attitude towards safety and a demonstrated ability to comply with the safety requirements.
  • Demonstrated design and engineering experience in mining, processing plant or oil and gas industries.
  • Have current knowledge of industry or regulatory standards and study criteria pertinent to instrumentation and control systems engineering ensuring compliance of design work with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients.
  • Smart Instrumentation experience is favourable
  • Working Rights in Australia without employer sponsorship are required.
