Overview
The part-time HVAC Mechanic is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical equipment throughout the facility. This includes overseeing HVAC systems, package units, cooling towers, chillers, pumps, and related HVAC systems. The role ensures proper technical performance of all environmental control systems, coordinates with internal departments and external contractors, and supports facility operations by monitoring events, equipment start-up/shut-down, and system performance.
This role pays an hourly rate of $36.34-$40.38 (per CBA).
Benefits as per the union agreement.
This position will remain open until September 25, 2026.
Responsibilities
HVAC Operations & Preventive Maintenance
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot computerized HVAC systems.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC units, refrigeration systems, pumps, atmospheric control equipment, and related mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance and equipment reliability.
  • Perform repairs on HVAC units, refrigeration systems, pumps, and atmospheric control equipment.
  • Monitor chemical treatment for cooling towers and chillers.
  • Monitor and adjust Building Automation System (BAS) controls to maintain occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and proper system performance.

Event Operations & Facility Support
  • Provide oversight of event-related HVAC requests, ensuring timely coordination, accurate scheduling, and optimal environmental conditions for all functions.
  • Support event operations by ensuring HVAC systems are operating efficiently and venue spaces maintain required environmental conditions before, during, and after events.
  • Inspect mechanical systems and support external maintenance contractors.

Safety, Compliance & Asset Management
  • Perform all work in accordance with MBCC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety policies, OSHA requirements, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and applicable building and mechanical codes.
  • Assist with inventory of tools and parts.
  • Complete work orders, preventive maintenance records, and equipment documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.

Work Environment & Additional Responsibilities
  • Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting heavy objects, climbing, kneeling, and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • May be assigned additional duties as necessary to support operational needs.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical training, vocational certification, or an Associate's degree in HVAC, Mechanical Systems, or a related field is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience maintaining and repairing commercial HVAC systems, preferably within a convention center, stadium, arena, public assembly facility, or other large commercial environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, refrigeration, chilled water, and mechanical building systems, including computerized Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, safety procedures, and applicable mechanical codes and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members, contractors, vendors, and internal departments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced event environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve HVAC and mechanical system issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, Building Automation Systems (BAS), and mechanical controls.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient building operations.
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational priorities and respond effectively to event-related HVAC and facility support needs.

Technology Skills:
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Ability to utilize computers, mobile devices, and standard office technology to complete work orders, preventive maintenance documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), or other facility management software is preferred.

Certifications and Licenses:
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is required.
  • Journeyman HVAC License or equivalent HVAC trade certification preferred.
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification is preferred.

Work Schedule & Conditions:
  • Must be available to work evening and overnight hours.
  • Must have flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and additional hours as operational demands require.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency maintenance needs and support critical facility operations during overnight shifts.
  • Must be comfortable working in mechanical rooms, rooftops, loading docks, event spaces, and back-of-house areas.
  • Ability to climb/balance on ladders and stairs, walk extended distances, and work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, fumes, odors, heat, humidity, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift/move heavy objects.
