Department: Hospitality Services / Food Services
Reports To: Chef Manager, Food Services Manager, or General Manager
Location: Long Term Care and Supportive Living

Position Summary

The Cook is responsible for the preparation, cooking, portioning, and service of meals in accordance with approved menus, therapeutic diets, food safety standards, and resident preferences. The Cook plays a key role in providing a positive dining experience while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation and Service

  • Prepare and cook meals, soups, sauces, desserts, and other menu items according to standardized recipes.
  • Ensure meals are prepared and served according to established meal schedules.
  • Follow approved menus, production sheets, and therapeutic diet requirements.
  • Monitor food quality, appearance, taste, and temperature throughout production and service.
  • Ensure proper portion control to support nutritional standards and cost management.
  • Assist with special events, theme meals, and resident-centered dining initiatives.

Resident and Customer Service

  • Promote a positive dining experience for residents, families, staff, and visitors.
  • Respond professionally to resident feedback and meal-related concerns.
  • Support resident choice and individualized dining needs whenever possible.
  • Maintain a respectful and compassionate approach when interacting with residents.

Food Safety and Sanitation

  • Adhere to all food safety regulations, infection prevention and control practices, and company policies.
  • Complete required temperature logs and food safety documentation accurately.
  • Ensure proper food storage, labeling, dating, and rotation using FIFO principles.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen equipment, workstations, storage areas, and service areas.
  • Participate in cleaning schedules and deep cleaning activities.

Inventory and Ordering Support

  • Assist with receiving, storing, and organizing deliveries.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate shortages to leadership.
  • Participate in inventory counts as assigned.
  • Minimize food waste through proper production planning and utilization of leftovers in accordance with food safety standards.

Teamwork and Operations

  • Work collaboratively with dietary aides, servers, housekeeping staff, nursing staff, and leadership.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new employees as required.
  • Support operational coverage during staffing shortages or special circumstances.
  • Participate in team meetings, safety meetings, and required training programs.

Health and Safety

  • Follow all occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Use equipment safely and report hazards, incidents, or injuries immediately.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Contribute to a safe and respectful workplace.
Qualifications

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Food Safe Certification required.
  • Culinary training or equivalent experience considered an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum one year of cooking experience in healthcare, long term care, retirement living, hospitality, or institutional food service preferred.
  • Experience preparing therapeutic diets and texture modified foods is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of food preparation techniques and food safety standards.
  • Ability to read recipes, production sheets, and diet information accurately.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
