Job description

Job Summary:

This position reports to the Operations Manager within the scope of the mission, guiding principles, values, ethics and strategic goals of Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa, Inc.  This position must possess a valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s license rated for Class “A” operation of a semi-tractor trailer at twenty (20) tons or more.   This position is responsible driving per the Iowa truck traffic laws and regulations, loading/unloading material, for determining mechanical failure and/or irregularity in truck operation, some warehouse work including baling as needed and forklift operation, light-duty maintenance and housekeeping.  Provides excellent service to both internal and external customers by way of communication and assistance and by way of quality of work.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Load and unload trucks according to daily schedule and orders.
  • Secures and handles all material properly.
  • Transports shipment to destination within the scope of Iowa truck traffic laws and regulations.
  • Completes daily equipment inspection and documents appropriately.  Immediately reports equipment failures or inferiorities.
  • Greets Donation Drive Volunteers pleasantly and ensures good customer service and a donating experience that meets agency expectations.
  • Donations are distributed to proper work or holding area and donation count is recorded accurately.
  • Offers tax receipt form to each donor.
  • As needed, sorts material so that 95% unsaleable items are redirected to garbage or salvage.
  • Theft is prevented by remaining alert at all times in all areas and immediately notifying management of any suspicious activities.
  • Assists and helps with shoveling snow, replacing light bulbs, washing windows, and any other upkeep as needed.
  • Advises and demonstrates all job duties for new team members.
  • Assists in maintaining top-flight condition appearance of any Goodwill facility/equipment by focusing on housekeeping and safety at all times.  Communicates needs for repair, fixtures, maintenance, etc.
  • Works collaboratively within department to maximize service opportunities and maintain a continuous improvement agenda.
  • Helps prepare outgoing truck loads including baling, sorting, operating forklift, organizing, etc.
  • Follows the “Iowa Clean Air Act 142D.3.B”; All enclosed areas within places of employment including but not limited to work areas, private offices, conference and meeting rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, employee lounges and cafeterias, hallways, medical facilities, restrooms, elevators, stairways and stairwells, and vehicles owned, leased, or provided by the employer unless otherwise provided under this chapter.  
  • Minimizes waste expense and maximize salvage revenue opportunity by recycling as many products as possible in most resourceful way.
  • Ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition and that all safeguards are in place.   
  • Operates forklift truck.
  • Completes all duties of the job and all work requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.  Minimum of 2 years of any combination of military service, high school, or related full-time employment may substitute.  
  • Must possess valid Iowa CDL Class A license for operation of tractor-trailer at 20+ tons
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess a positive attitude and infect others with similar enthusiasm.
  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull fifty pounds with assistance.
  • Loyalty to the agency and its mission and policies.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.  Ability to work a flexible schedule at multiple locations including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to obtain a forklift license.
  • Ability to use good judgment, discretion, and initiative.
