Job Summary
The Biology Department is seeking a qualified student to assist with BIO 487: Forest Ecology during the Fall 2026 semester. This course explores how environmental factors, wildlife, and human activities influence the establishment, development, and growth of forest communities.
The course meets on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from late August through mid-November. This position is appointed on a per-semester basis.
Responsibilities*
  • Support field- and laboratory-based learning activities related to forest ecology
  • Follow and adhere to established field and animal use protocols
  • Assist with preparation, organization, and cleanup of field study sites and equipment
  • Participate in field activities involving forest vegetation surveys, forest productivity assessments, soil pit analysis, invasive species monitoring, and related ecological investigations
  • Support the collection, organization, and management of environmental and ecological data
  • Assist with routine project logistics, data entry, and maintenance of field records as needed

Required Qualifications*
  • Successful completion of BIO 487 at UM-Flint with a grade of B or higher
  • Ability to work in typical Michigan fall field conditions
  • Reliable transportation to travel up to 50 minutes to off-campus field sites
  • Current student status at UM-Flint
  • Recommendation from a Biology faculty member

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience in Biology and/or Chemistry labs
  • Experience in Wildlife Biology-related research and techniques
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Modes of Work
Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
