Job Summary

The Telemetry Technician is responsible for the continuous monitoring and surveillance of telemetry patients. This role includes recognizing and reporting rhythm changes and potentially life-threatening arrhythmias to the Registered Nurse according to established protocols.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor patient cardiac rhythms and physiological parameters.

  • Observe, document, and correctly interpret cardiac rhythms.

  • Recognize rhythm abnormalities and promptly report concerns to the RN.

  • Operate monitoring equipment correctly and troubleshoot when necessary.

  • Identify and respond to monitor alarms and emergency conditions.

  • Maintain composure and communicate effectively in high-stress situations.

  • Utilize office equipment such as fax machines, scanners, copiers, telephones, and computers.

  • Ensure proper documentation of all electronic and paper communications.

  • Answer phone calls and direct inquiries to the correct resource.

  • Accurately document the initiation and discontinuation of patient monitoring.

  • Follow proper procedures for managing patient records and ensuring confidentiality.

  • Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Organizational Responsibilities

In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed above, all employees are expected to adhere to Summit Pacific behavior and patient experience standards, comply with policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines, and act in an ethical, professional, respectful, and collaborative manner.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Completion of a Telemetry Technician or ECG interpretation course is preferred.

  • One to two years of work experience Certified Nursing Assistant in a patient care setting preferred

  • Telemetry Technician experience preferred.

Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

  • A Certified Nursing Assistant License is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proficiency in ECG rhythm interpretation and pass the exam.

  • New Telemetry Technicians will be enrolled into a Summit Pacific Medical Center approved telemetry course. The Telemetry Technician will have 3 weeks to complete the training and successfully pass the exam from date of hire.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to pass the yearly competency test.

Physical Requirements

  • The position requires lifting less than 10 pounds and lifting 10-35 pounds on a frequent basis (approximately 30-70% of the time). Lifting more than 35 pounds is required occasionally (about 10-30% of the time).

  • Carrying less than 10 pounds is performed frequently, while carrying between 10-35 pounds is never required. Carrying more than 35 pounds occurs occasionally.

  • Pushing and pulling loads between 0-35 pounds are required on an occasional basis.

  • The job involves sitting occasionally and standing and walking frequently throughout the workday.

  • Bending and stooping are required occasionally, while crouching occurs seldom (approximately 1-10% of the time).

  • The position involves seldom exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP).
