Our recruiting firm is partnering with a well-established nonprofit organization that provides community-based services, resources, and support programs that help individuals and families achieve greater financial stability and well-being. This organization is seeking a Part-Time Interim Controller to provide hands-on financial leadership during a transitional period.
The Interim Controller will oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, grant and fund accounting, budgeting support, audit coordination, and staff development. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in mission-driven environments and can quickly assess needs, maintain strong financial controls, and support organizational leadership with timely financial insights.
Job Description
The Part-Time Interim Controller will be responsible for leading day-to-day accounting and financial operations while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and effective financial stewardship across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the monthly financial close process, including account reconciliations, variance analysis, and timely financial reporting for leadership, committees, and board meetings.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses to support organizational decision-making.
  • Manage grant accounting, restricted funds, and endowment activity while ensuring compliance with donor and funding requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for funders and stakeholders.
  • Support the annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes in partnership with executive leadership and program managers.
  • Coordinate the annual audit and IRS Form 990 preparation with external auditors and tax professionals.
  • Oversee year-end reporting requirements, including W-2 and 1099 filings.
  • Review and approve invoices and monitor cash receipt, deposit, and reconciliation activities.
  • Supervise and approve payroll processes.
  • Train, mentor, and support accounting staff while helping maintain a high-performing finance function.
  • Support related entities through financial consolidation, budget-to-actual analysis, audit coordination, Form 990 management, and insurance renewal activities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement efficiencies that strengthen financial operations and internal controls.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting and financial management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end close processes.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong proficiency with accounting systems and databases.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze financial information and present meaningful recommendations to leadership.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, including grant and restricted fund accounting.
  • Experience supporting audits, Form 990 preparation, and endowment accounting.
  • Experience with Financial Edge or similar nonprofit accounting software.
  • Previous experience managing or mentoring accounting staff.
