Departmental Overview
The College of Environmental Design - the top-ranked public school in the U.S. for architecture and the built environment (2026 QS World University Rankings) - is UC Berkeley's home for theory, research, innovation, and practice focused on the built environment.
Housing the Departments of Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning, as well as the Institute of Urban & Regional Development and five affiliated research centers, the college is an interdisciplinary creative community dedicated to solving the world's most pressing environmental problems.
Research and teaching focus on design excellence, climate solutions, equity and social justice, and new materials and technologies. CED is located in Bauer Wurster Hall, named after architect and founding dean William W. Wurster and housing expert Catherine Bauer Wurster.
Under the direction of the Director of Fabrication Services, this position is responsible for: providing instructions on safe use and supervising activity in the CED Fabrication Shop, Digital Fabrication Lab, Material Store, Shop Yard, and Spray Booth. Provide consultation and assistance to users on their projects. Assist with promoting a safe, professional, inclusive, and positive shop culture. Clean, organize, repair equipment, and maintain a safe work environment. Maintain adherence to EH&S, CalOSHA, and campus compliance rules and regulations.

Responsibilities
***Limited, Part-time Appointment - 40% FTE***
60% Under the direction of the Director of Fabrication Services, this position is responsible for: providing instructions on safe use and supervising activity in the CED fabrication resources including the Fabrication Shop, Digital Fabrication Lab, Material Store, Shop Yard, and Spray Booth. Provide consultation and assistance to users on their projects. Assist with promoting a safe, professional, inclusive, and positive shop culture. Maintain adherence to EH&S, CalOSHA, and campus compliance rules and regulations.
20% Work in a collaborative team to schedule and provide safety orientations/trainings, order supplies, schedule maintenance/upgrades, and manage inventories.
10% Assist with departmental projects/builds, classrooms, shop/lab, and renovations. Plan and teach topical workshops and support department events: graduation, summer programs, etc.
10% Other duties as assigned, may include but not limited to: Building, repairing, and refinishing furniture.
Required Qualifications
  • Candidates must possess woodshop fabrication skills and digital fabrication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of jig construction, fixturing, and problem-solving unconventional building methods.
  • Working knowledge of digital fabrication tools/software for laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC cutting.
  • Ability to instruct, mentor, and assist a diverse student population. Be an enthusiastic educational collaborator.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Solid abilities to consult and advise on instructional/research design/construction experiments and furniture pieces.
  • Ability to focus, be patient, and communicate effectively in a high-stress, busy, and loud working environment.
  • Demonstrates ability to read, write, and follow oral/written instructions provided in English. Ability to absorb and execute complex instructions.
  • Incumbent must possess a high level of motivation and initiative. Must be willing to support and actively contribute to a highly collaborative team environment, with a proper customer-service attitude and active, appropriate communication to the customer and supervisor.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and professionalism are required.
  • Must be able to access work sites including heights and confined spaces; walk, stand, bend, kneel, and work on your feet for extended periods. Ability to move and handle heavy objects. Able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Certified Red Cross first aid and CPR training or the ability to achieve certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field, two years of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $43.02.
