Job description

THE POSITION Step into a role where your work helps millions of people reach their destinations. The Civil Engineer position at the Department of Transportation places you at the center of major highway improvements. You will use your engineering skills to guide projects from early planning through final design.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position supports the preparation of roadway designs and engineering details needed to advance PennDOT projects. This specialized work includes drafting, calculating project elements, and assembling complete plan packages that guide construction.

As a Civil Engineer, you will perform the following duties: Design Preparation: Develop construction and right-of-way drawings and determine quantities for a wide-range of roadway projects Geometry Calculations: Compute grade lines, curve data, drainage needs, and earthwork quantities for design accuracy Drafting Activities: Produce detailed plans using CADD tools from preliminary layouts to final drawings Field Support: Assist engineers during field visits by taking notes, measurements, and reference sketches Data Interpretation: Apply survey notes, aerial photographs, and engineering information to support project designs Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, report hazards, and understand emergency actions for all work areas Interested in learning more. Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 5 days in a 10 day pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an engineer-in-training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate's degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; or Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

Special Requirement: This position requires possession of a valid driver's license. Other Requirements: PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title. You must be able to perform essential job functions.
