What is a Part Time Embedded Software Engineer?

A Part Time Embedded Software Engineer is a professional who works less than full-time hours to develop, test, and maintain software that runs on embedded systems. These systems are specialized computing devices found in products like cars, home appliances, and medical devices. Part time roles often offer flexible schedules, allowing engineers to balance work with other commitments while contributing to software development, debugging, and hardware integration. Responsibilities can vary depending on the employer's needs and the project requirements.

What is the difference between Part Time Embedded Software vs Part Time Firmware Engineer?

AspectPart Time Embedded SoftwarePart Time Firmware Engineer
Required SkillsProgramming (C, C++), RTOS, hardware integrationEmbedded C, microcontrollers, hardware debugging
Work EnvironmentHardware labs, development teams, product testingMicrocontroller programming, hardware testing, prototyping
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, medical devicesConsumer electronics, IoT devices, industrial equipment

Part Time Embedded Software focuses on developing software that runs on embedded systems, often involving real-time operating systems and hardware integration. Part Time Firmware Engineer specializes in programming firmware directly into microcontrollers or hardware components. While both roles require similar skills and work environments, Embedded Software may encompass broader software development, whereas Firmware Engineering is more hardware-specific.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Embedded Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, with proficiency in C/C++ programming and understanding of embedded systems fundamentals. Familiarity with microcontroller development environments, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and tools such as debuggers and version control (e.g., Git) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and managing time efficiently. These skills and qualifications are important to ensure reliable, efficient development and maintenance of embedded systems within limited work hours.

How does a part-time embedded software engineer typically collaborate with full-time team members and manage project handoffs?

As a part-time embedded software engineer, you will often coordinate closely with full-time team members to ensure smooth progress on projects. This typically involves regular status updates, clear documentation of your contributions, and participating in team meetings, often virtually. Since embedded software development can require deep integration with hardware teams, proactive communication and thorough handoff notes are crucial to avoid delays or misunderstandings. Many organizations use agile methodologies and version control systems, which help keep part-time contributors aligned with project goals and timelines.

Job description

Principal AI-Native Embedded Systems Architecture - 10-20 hours

Technical Advisor & Change Agent (Embedded Software & AI-Native Transformation)

Location: Burlington, MA area (Remote with local onsite workshops)

Compensation: $150.00 to $250.00+ per hour (Depending on experience and engagement structure)

Hours: 10 to 20 hours per week

Engagement Options: 3-Month Contract / Temp-to-Perm / Permanent Part-Time

Are you a veteran software architect who knows how to build rock-solid medical devices, but you are also actively pushing the boundaries of AI-assisted engineering?

We are looking for a high-caliber technical advisor to partner with our Software Architecture team in the Boston area. In this role, you will help define the future of embedded software development for regulated medical devices, serve as a mentor, and act as a change agent. You will bridge the gap between rigorous regulatory compliance and cutting-edge, AI-native development workflows.

Flexible Engagement Models

We are looking for the right expertise and are highly flexible on how we structure this partnership:

  • The Initial Launch: A 3-month consulting contract at $150.00 to $250.00+ per hour, requiring 10 to 20 hours per week.

  • The Pathways: This role is open as a straight part-time advisory consultancy, a temp-to-perm transition, or a direct-hire permanent part-time position.

  • Work Environment: Remote with periodic onsite workshops. As a consultant, this will start as an onsite workshop once a week. (Note: If this role transitions to a full-time W2 position in the future, the layout will adjust to a minimum of 3 days in the office per week).

The Top 5 Technical "Must-Haves"

To succeed in this role, you must bring deep, authoritative expertise in the following five areas:

  1. AI-Native Engineering Transformation: You don't just use GitHub Copilot; you understand how to fundamentally transform development workflows. You can evaluate and implement tools like Cursor, OpenHands, Claude Code, Amazon Bedrock, MCP Servers, and emerging agentic frameworks.

  2. Regulated Medical Device Embedded Software: Deep expertise in embedded software architecture specifically for medical devices. You must know how to maintain strict compliance with FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, and quality system requirements.

  3. High-Impact Communication & Leadership: You must be fluent across all layers of an engineering organization. You are equally comfortable discussing software architecture strategy with senior leadership, reviewing code with engineers, and coaching teams on AI-native development workflows.

  4. Advanced Cybersecurity Infrastructure: Expert knowledge of software lifecycle processes against FDA cybersecurity guidance. You understand secure software supply chains, SBOMs, patching, and vulnerability management.

  5. Embedded Linux & Yocto Architecture: Solid experience advising on embedded Linux platforms, Yocto architecture, and overall platform modernization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architecture & Strategy: Advise software architects on platform architecture, cybersecurity architecture, and system-of-systems integration. Facilitate architecture reviews and challenge decisions to improve scalability and reuse.

  • AI Adoption & Guardrails: Assess current workflows to identify AI adoption opportunities. Introduce AI-enabled workflows for requirements generation, threat modeling, test generation, and regulatory documentation while establishing clear quality metrics.

  • Mentoring & Enablement: Mentor software architects, technical leads, and senior engineers. Conduct practical architecture workshops, build reference implementations, and establish internal communities of practice around AI-native engineering.

  • Reporting: Interface directly with Software Architects, DevOps, Cybersecurity, and Technical Leads, reporting key findings and strategic recommendations directly to Software Leadership.
