Job description

Director of Website Strategy & Design

Run the website service inside an established agency.

Our website service has strong clients, a long waitlist, and more demand than we can currently take on. But right now, too many of the major decisions still run through me.

We're looking for a senior website strategist and designer to take that over.

This is not a typical senior web designer job. You'll personally design websites and own the strategy and team behind them. You'll work directly with me (Michael) and my business partner Jamie to take ownership of our website services, improve our work, and help shape what we do next.

You may have run an agency before. You may be a senior web designer, creative lead, or web strategist who already takes responsibility for websites you make. Either way, you're probably ready for more.

In this role, you'll have decision-making authority, work directly with ownership, and have a path toward expanded leadership and profit sharing as the service grows.

Our company

We're Nuphoriq, a niche marketing agency based in Chicago. We've been in business for 15+ years with a large portfolio of long-term clients. We build roughly 1015 new websites per year and manage 50+ client sites.

Most agencies ask clients endless questions and rely heavily on client direction. We don't. Our clients trust us to make the right calls on their behalf, and we are rigorous in our standards. That means no bad clients, and almost no client revisions on our work ;).

It also means that this role requires confidence and judgment. You need to bond with and understand our clients, form a point of view, and move work forward without waiting for perfect information.

What you'll do

You'll lead website strategy and design across new website builds and existing client sites. You won't personally handle every piece of copy, SEO, development, or analytics. But you will be responsible for whether the website succeeds as a whole.

Ultimately, you are responsible for all of our website services, that includes:

  • Performance. Track and optimize our client's websites to improve specific outcomes like lead quantity, lead quality, and traffic.
  • Design. You'll personally design great websites.
  • Strategy. You'll speak with clients to understand their business, audience, offers, and goals then determine what the website needs to do.
  • Analytics. You'll set benchmarks, track analytics, and make decisions about what needs to improve.
  • Traffic. You'll help drive the right visitors through smart site structure, content direction, SEO, and GEO.
  • Conversions. You'll design sites that turn visitors into leads and keep improving the numbers over time.
  • Team. You'll lead our web team and freelancers through the website process.
  • Innovation. You'll improve our design, tools, systems, and process as web, SEO, AI, and development evolve.
  • Growth. You'll help build a website team and system that allows us to create even more websites, without sacrificing quality.
What you need to be good at
  • Strong design ability is a must. We'd like to see an extensive portfolio of websites you've designed.
  • You also need business judgment. You should be able to speak with a client, and understand how to create a website that achieves the business outcomes they care about.
  • You don't need to be the only writer, SEO person, analyst, or developer, but you do need to understand those areas well enough to set strategy, lead a team, and achieve our client's goals.
This is a strong fit if
  • You have 6+ years agency experience
  • You have a portfolio of 5+ websites that you personally designed from scratch
  • You are comfortable creating brands and design systems from scratch
  • You want responsibilities and rewards that come with leadership
  • You're comfortable making decisions without complete information
  • You want to work with clients who know and respect you, and vice versa
  • You want to earn more as the service grows
This is not a fit if
  • You prefer detailed instructions over making judgment calls
  • You want to hand off responsibility once mockups are done
  • You want a pure management role with no hands-on design work
  • You're looking for freelance or part time work
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary, please email me for specifics
  • Profit sharing as the role and service grow we'll walk you through how this works
  • Hybrid remote /in-office. We're located just outside Chicago.
  • Health insurance, 401k matching, and paid time off
