Job description

Traffic Operations Data Engineer
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking an experienced transportation engineer to join the Traffic Management Division (TMD). As a Traffic Operations Data Engineer, you will oversee the field data collection sensors that drive critical algorithms for travel time messaging, ramp meter rates, and Express Lanes pricing. Your role bridges the gap between hardware, software, and actionable insights.
Key Responsibilities
As the Traffic Operations Data Engineer, you will lead the Traffic Management Division's data utilization efforts through the following duties:
Asset Management & Integration
  • Sensor Oversight: Ensure data quality from field sensors during both construction and normal operations.
  • Deployment Planning: Partner with electronic technicians to plan new deployments and the replacement of existing sensors.
  • System Integration: Manage the device integration process, including establishing technical specifications and tracking progress during implementation.
Data Analysis & Reporting
  • Forecasting: Produce travel delay forecasts for holidays and major events.
  • Performance Metrics: Analyze data to develop performance measures that track system health and inform resource allocation.
  • Communication: Translate complex traffic analysis into effective visual, written, and verbal formats for diverse audiences.
Project & Resource Management
  • Software & Research: Manage contracts for data management software development and serve as a technical advisor for research projects on Technical Advisory Committees.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with regional departments and external municipalities to ensure operational alignment.
  • Consultant Oversight: Direct consultant resources and manage associated contracts to support divisional goals.

Qualifications
Licensure & Experience
  • Professional Licensure: Must be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of two years of engineering experience post-licensure is required.
  • Underfill Option: Candidates with at least one year of post-PE experience may be considered for an Engineer III underfill position (Hourly range: $36.55 - $59.29).

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
  • Domain Expertise: At least two years of experience in traffic operations.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proven experience in data management and analytics.
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead, partner effectively, and communicate complex information clearly.
