Job Description
Cultivate Learning has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Data Collector to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Community Engaged Research and Evaluation (CERE) staff, the Data Collector will collect data as efficiently and objectively as possible within the constraints and comfort level of individual providers and act as a liaison between them and the project team. The position will use independent decision making to administer and score assessments and will involve visits to early learning sites across the state of Washington. Duties include coordinating with providers, collecting data that informs early childhood education practices and children's growth and development, participating in the development of research designs and revisions to data collection processes, maintaining reliability, code assessments, data entry and processing, and composing and editing research briefs, technical reports, publications, and presentations.
Key Responsibilities
Research activities (75%)
  • Complete data collection and coding for each assessment and submit the data according to project procedures and protocols.
  • Analyze, draft, organize, and prepare analytical reports, including 6-8 page provider reports, based on collected and quality-checked data, following project templates, writing standards, and supervisory guidance.
  • Use independent judgment in the field and during data handling to address routine and emergent research issues arising during data collection, coding, quality review, analysis, and reporting;
  • Apply scientific knowledge of standardized assessments, coding for reliability, child development and early learning and care environments gained through formalized training.
  • Attend trainings and meetings with CERE staff.
  • Follow, adapt as appropriate, and implement Cultivate Learning data collection protocols and procedures, including tailoring data collection activities to individual site needs while remaining within established project guidelines.
  • Meet established reliability rates on all assigned assessment instruments (for example, classroom and/or individual child assessments).
  • Meet established reliability standards for all assigned assessment instruments and maintain reliability in accordance with Cultivate Learning and project requirements.
  • Complete data collection within allotted time schedule for each observation/assessment and in coordination with the CERE and Quality Recognition teams.
  • Communicate questions, deviations, or concerns regarding data collection, data quality, analysis, or reporting to appropriate supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate professionalism, decorum, and demeanor when interacting with providers, children, and others involved in field-based research activities.
  • Responsible for the quality checking process of assessments, data quality control, and composing reports to the providers.
  • Perform accurate and timely data entry of collected research data into designated databases and systems.

Administrative duties (25%)
  • Assist with project management, coordinate site visits, correspond with study participants, disseminate and collect study related activities and materials, monitor and track files and documents, and maintain study information confidentially and securely.
  • Responsible for the quality checking process of assessments, data quality control, and composing reports.
  • Support CERE and project related infrastructure.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with significant coursework in early childhood education and care, child development and learning, early childhood assessment, and/or family systems and up to 1 year of experience working with children
  • Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

Additional Qualifications
  • Meet and maintain set reliability criteria on all assigned assessment instruments.
  • Ability to follow rigorous data collection protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to be flexible in meeting Cultivate Learning scheduling needs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within and outside of your designated region to conduct assessments with reliable transportation
  • Experience with data entry, working with databases, file management, and working within project deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and experience with standardized assessments.
  • Ability to work with people of various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-2 years working on a large-scale research project.
  • Ability to collect data daily across the state of Washington with reliable transportation.
  • Familiarity with standardized child assessments that measure executive function, social-emotional learning, and language development.
  • Knowledge of standardized assessments that measure the quality of early learning and care environments, such as the Classroom Assessment Scoring System.

About the Team
Cultivate Learning is funded by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and provides training and research on the quality of childcare and early learning in Washington State. Currently, Cultivate Learning is involved in the Washington State Quality Recognition and Improvement System (QRIS) standards initiative, Early Achievers. Cultivate Learning is an essential part of Washington State's Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge initiative to give childcare providers the support and skills they need to help children develop the skills they need to be successful in school.
