About the Department
Enterprise Application Services (EAS) is in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) division at North Carolina State University. EAS is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, enhancement, maintenance, configuration management, and database administration for the University's enterprise business applications, data warehouses, analytics platforms, and the ServiceNow platform supported by OIT. Systems/platforms supported include: Enterprise Document Mgmt (OnBase), Financial Systems, HR Systems, Access Mgmt Systems (SAR and Guest & Affiliate), the MyPack Portal, Student Information Systems (SIS), the REPORTER (non-credit) System, Enterprise Research Administration Systems (InfoEd), Faculty Excellence Systems, ServiceNow's IT Service Management platform, the enterprise data warehouse platform, the enterprise analytics platform (PowerBI), and the associated configuration management, database administration, and integration of the supported systems.
The Database Administration Services (DBA) team within EAS is responsible for administering all centralized database environments of the University. It conducts database installation and maintenance, performs database administration and operational support, provides database design and consultation, and ensures database security and performance.

Essential Job Duties
The Enterprise DBA position serves as an experienced member of the team supporting the OIT Oracle enterprise databases, with specialized responsibility for Oracle Exadata engineered systems. This role requires technical expertise in enterprise-class database platforms to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security across the university's mission-critical applications. Responsibilities include:
Enterprise Database Administration
  • Ensure the availability, performance, security, and recoverability of 19C+ enterprise Oracle databases (including RAC and multitenant) through proactive monitoring, OEM management, patching, and incident response.
  • Design, implement, and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies aligned with enterprise SLAs and compliance requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex database performance and reliability issues, collaborating with application teams, infrastructure teams, and Oracle support as needed.
  • Apply Oracle security technologies to protect enterprise data and mitigate risk.
  • Participate in an after-hours on-call rotation to support critical database services.
  • Collaborate with team members, peers, customers, and management on processes, procedures, documentation, and strategic direction.
  • Contribute to technology planning by recommending improvements to database platforms, standards, and long-term strategy.

Exadata Administration
  • Administer and optimize Oracle Exadata engineered systems to maximize performance, availability, and resource efficiency.
  • Perform system-level administration, including patching, capacity planning, health checks, and integration with enterprise monitoring and backup solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex Exadata incidents spanning database, storage, network, and operating system layers.
  • Support the Linux operating system underpinning Exadata environments, coordinating OS patching and performance tuning.
  • Apply Exadata-specific capabilities and best practices to support enterprise workloads and service levels.

Other Responsibilities
Technical Knowledge
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Oracle Exadata engineered systems, perform system-level administration including patching, capacity planning, and troubleshooting complex incidents across database, Linux OS, storage, and network layers.
  • Stay current with Oracle and Exadata technologies, patches, and architectural changes, assessing relevance to the University's environment.

Technical Solutions Development
  • Architect and implement standards, automation scripting, and disaster recovery strategies; evaluate vendor roadmaps and technology trends to recommend future-state database platforms and adoption strategies.
  • Develop and refine backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies aligned with enterprise SLAs.
  • Create automation and scripting solutions to improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Recommend future-state database and platform strategies based on technology trends, risks, and enterprise needs.

Planning and Organizing
  • Participate in the lifecycle management for enterprise database and Exadata environments by coordinating capacity planning, patching, and upgrades while balancing operational risk with system availability.
  • Evaluate vendor roadmaps, new features, and emerging technologies to inform adoption strategies.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, operational standards, and technical reference materials.

Technical Support
  • Ensure the availability, performance, security, and recoverability of enterprise database services through proactive monitoring and incident response.
  • Diagnose and resolve highly complex database and Exadata issues across database, operating system, storage, and network layers.
  • Lead root cause analysis for major incidents manage vendor escalations (Oracle Support) and participate in the after-hours on-call rotations.

Customer Service
  • Partner with cross-functional OIT teams to advise on solution design and operational readiness; maintain thorough technical documentation and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and mentoring.
  • Demonstrate ownership and accountability for assigned platforms and customer-impacting issues from initiation through resolution.
  • Communicate technical concepts, risks, and solutions clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree and one year of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree and 2 or more years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience as an Oracle database administrator on 19c+
  • Experience working on a Linux platform
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work in a team environment, sharing and collaborating
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time in an interrupt-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced experience supporting and administering enterprise Oracle databases, including RAC, ASM, Data Guard, RMAN, OEM, and Oracle security technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to complex technical initiatives and root-cause analysis efforts
  • Experience working in higher education or similarly complex enterprise environments
