Job Summary:

The City of Largo is hiring a Part-Time Library Assistant I - Circulation team members to support daily library operations and provide excellent customer service. This entry-level role involves assisting patrons, supporting library programs, and performing routine tasks within a designated section. While working under established policies and procedures, you'll use independent judgment and creativity to enhance the library experience for our community.
Part-time positions are 20 hours per week, including EVERY Saturday 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with the remaining hours scheduled throughout the week (to include day and evening hours).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • email accounts

    • downloading documents

    • saving and printing documents and files

  • Monitors computer use policy for compliance

  • Answers the telephone and provides general information in response to inquiries

  • Checks library materials in and out of the library

  • Provides assistance at the self-checkout counter

  • Registers patrons for borrower's cards and card renewal; enters patron information

  • Handles cash, credit cards and records payment of patron fees and fines

  • Directs patrons to specific facilities, subject areas, and titles

  • Plans and presents programs and special events both in the library and through outreach efforts

  • Enters, updates, accesses, and retrieves data with computer applications

  • Uses audiovisual and multimedia equipment and assists patrons with questions about the equipment or use

  • Creates promotional materials

  • Retrieves items from the book drop and the collection as needed

  • Shelves books and other library materials; reads and straightens shelves to maintain alpha and numeric order and appearance

  • Prepares carts for shelving

  • Attends meetings as required

  • Performs basic computer work

CHILDREN'S DEPT AND TEEN ROOM

  • Provides customer service at the Children's and Teen Room Desks

    • Assists patrons of all ages to meet their needs

    • Monitors the areas and corrects behavioral issues

    • Maintains the spaces by cleaning, shelving, and straightening

    • Creates and maintains engaging and appropriate displays

  • Provides children's and teen programming

    • Independently plans and presents a weekly or monthly program or storytime

    • Works within a team to plan and present special events

    • Assists other team members with program preparation

    • Designs marketing materials to promote programs

  • Trains team members at youth public service desks

  • Shows a passion for youth/teen advocacy

  • Has knowledge of children's and young adult books and other trends

  • May assist with:

    • Teen Volunteer Program, including hiring, training, and coaching volunteers

    • Collection Maintenance, including processing of materials and weeding the collection of damaged or underused items

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS:As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)

  • At least one (1) year of high volume, face-to-face customer service or instructional experience preferred

  • Library Science degree or student majoring in Library Science preferred

  • A valid Driver's License or Florida ID

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Reading enthusiast who can recommend appropriate authors and titles to patrons

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 95% inside a climate-controlled building and 5% outside, which may include driving. Those assigned to the Bookmobile will be outside more frequently.

Physical Requirements: The job's essential functions require standing and walking up to approximately eight (8) hours per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Enough to listen to patron questions and answer telephones; enough to listen to the directions of supervisors. Speaking: Enough to talk to patrons on the phone and in person. Seeing: Enough to see and read computer monitor screens, identify titles, and read fine print.

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, calculators, self-checkout terminals, audiovisual equipment, cash registers, scanners, and all associated software.
