Forensic Nurse Examiner (PT) – Mount Clemens, MI


This is a part-time position working 12:00am -12:00pm two days per week.

Organization Overview:

Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

Turning Point, Inc empowers domestic and sexual violence survivors through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for

community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner

program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.

Position Overview:

The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is part of a team of nurses that provides 24/7 emergency medical care and evidence collection for

individuals who experience sexual assault and/or intimate partner strangulation. Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Forensic Nursing

Services, the FNE follows established protocols in providing medical forensic examinations, crisis intervention, testimonies, resources, and

support to patients and their significant others. The FNE also assists the Director in the sustainability and advancement of Turning Point’s

Forensic Nurse Examiner Program (FNEP) through the recruiting, training, and monitoring of staff members, as well as, building community

partner relationships through education and awareness. Travel is required between FNEP sites.


General Task Areas:

  • Implement agency and program mission and empowerment philosophy.
  • Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics.
  • Abides by agency policies, procedures, contracts, rules and regulations.
  • Maintains FNE program policies, procedures, protocols and on-call schedule.
  • Perform medical forensic examinations for patients who experience sexual assault and/or intimate partner strangulation, and suspects.
  • Coordinates case management and follow up appointments with patients.
  • Dispense prophylactic medications under the direction of a Program Medical Director(s) per policy.
  • Works with advocates to ensure crisis intervention and follow-up for sexual assault survivors.
  • Provide fact/expert witness testimony when necessary.
  • Provides presentations as requested by community programs (i.e. law enforcement, colleges, hospital ER staff, etc.).
  • Communicates with potential patients through hotline calls (answering medical questions, providing resources, providing crisis intervention, etc.).
  • Participates in the quality assurance of medical charts.
  • Maintains program statistical data and provides reports.
  • Supports the development of partnerships with the community stakeholders, such as hospitals and other systems members
    of the Multidisciplinary Team.
  • Recruit, train, and support Forensic Nurse Examiners and monitor their progress.
  • Assists in coordinating team meetings/trainings.
  • Maintains and assists in coordinating Nurse Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) related to FNE practice for nursing
    licensure and certification.
  • Provides/promotes coordinated peer review for team members and other professionals in the tri-county area.
  • Assists in coordinating the facility and equipment usage.
  • Supports 24/7 accountability of FNEP. Provides a minimum of 5 days, or equivalent, per month of administrative on-call support for the program.
  • Promote the FNEP publicly.
  • Assists in the planning, organization, and advancement of TP FNEP.
  • Participates in applicable staff, committee meetings, and other meetings deemed necessary by Turning Point and/or supervisor.
  • Cooperates with all other Turning Point programs to achieve organizational goals.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the CEO and Program Director.

Qualifications:

  • Current unencumbered RN license in the State of Michigan.
  • Current IAFN Member preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Five years prior nursing experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with sexual assault patients preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence in physical assessment, including pelvic examinations.
  • Documentation of specialty training in sexual examination techniques as outlined in protocol.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to provide trauma informed care.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to utilize computer for day to day tasks. (Microsoft Office 365)
  • Ability to utilize office equipment (Copier, Scanner, Fax, etc.)
  • Completion of Adult/Adolescent SANE basic training in accordance with IAFN guidelines.
  • Completion of Pediatric SANE basic training in accordance with IAFN guidelines, within one year of hire.
  • Current SANE-A Certification, or actively working towards, required.
  • Current SANE-P Certification from the IAFN preferred.

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must have reliable transportation, auto insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License, and a good driving record; must successfully
    pass a criminal background check.
