Job description

About the Job

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota occasionally needs lecturers to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate students.  Appointments may be full-time or part-time and may be limited to one semester.
This does not constitute a posting for vacancies, but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2024-25 academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis throughout the current academic year.  Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

The primary role of this position is teaching during the academic semester (fall and/or spring) in the areas of aerospace systems, solid mechanics and materials and fluid mechanics. Incumbent will engage in the following activities: develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, advise students on coursework and academic goals, grade assignments and projects, oversee laboratory and project design experiences as appropriate, and interact with other AEM faculty and instructors on matters related to teaching and student support. The detailed breakdown of the activities is below.

Duties/responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver lectures (20%)
  • Prepare homework assignments, quizzes and exams (20%)
  • Hold office hours (15%)
  • Assess student work (20%)
  • Supervise the teaching assistants (15%)
  • Manage the administration of the course (10%)

This position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship.  Updated on 11/10/2025.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
PhD in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics or related field.
Teaching experience in areas of aerospace systems, solid mechanics and materials and fluid mechanics including engineering mechanics courses such as statics, dynamics and mechanics of materials.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.        Experience with appropriate software applications, programming languages, and/or computational and online tools relevant to aerospace engineering and mechanics teaching and/or research.
2.        Experience teaching in active classroom settings.
3.        Strong interest in focusing on undergraduate teaching and linking instructional and research activities to promote student engagement in research. Ability to develop clear, reasonably demanding expectations of students, effectively meet teaching responsibilities, and achieve successful learning outcomes.
4.        Familiarity with academic literature and research on topics being taught in the classroom
