POSITION SUMMARY:ย
Assist RN in providing health services to students. Assist RN in promoting health education and preventive health practices for students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
ย ย ย ย Education/Certification:
ย ย ย ย Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing education program
ย ย ย ย Valid vocational nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
ย ย ย ย Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings at next available training opportunity (if not already certified at hire)
ย ย ย ย CPR Certification
ย ย ย Special Knowledge/Skills:
ย ย ย ย Knowledge of health assessment to identify student health issues
ย ย ย ย Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
ย ย Experience:
ย ย ย ย Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
ย ย Nursing Services
ย ย ย ย Ability to work independently in cases where RN is unavailable.
ย ย ย ย Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.
ย ย ย ย Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
ย ย ย ย Administer First Aid/CPR/AED when necessary.
ย ย ย ย Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
ย ย ย ย Perform state-mandated vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings and refer students as needed. ย Enter screening data for state reporting by the district deadlines.
ย ย ย ย Evaluate students for communicable diseases/conditions and follow state reporting and exclusion requirements.
ย ย ย ย Perform health procedures for students with health needs per physician orders.
ย ย ย ย Implement individualized health plans (IHPs) for students.
Instruction
ย ย ย ย Assist RN in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
ย ย ย ย Assist RN with providing health counseling and instruction to individual students.
ย ย ย ย Provide or assist RN with campus and district staff training and education related to health services.
Consultation
ย ย ย ย Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
ย ย ย ย Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
ย ย ย ย Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees.
ย ย ย ย Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
Administration
ย ย ย ย Review, evaluate, and maintain student immunization records in compliance with state immunization requirements.
ย ย ย ย Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
ย ย ย ย Supervise and train nurse aide(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
ย ย ย ย Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
ย ย ย ย Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
ย ย ย ย Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
ย ย ย ย Assist RN to develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.
ย ย ย ย Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
ย ย ย ย Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
ย ย ย ย Maintain confidentiality following FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
ย ย ย ย Assist RN with completing AED checks monthly of all building on campus.
ย ย ย ย Assist RN with completing Stop the Bleed Kits checks monthly for expiration and replacement in all buildings.
ย ย ย ย Participate in the preparation of Emergency Operations Plans for the campus.
ย ย ย ย Perform other duties as assigned.

ย ย ย ย Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermo-scan, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.
