Description
Job Title: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
Lancaster County is a county-based ALS emergency medical service. Our current shift runs on a 24/48 schedule. In January we will begin integrating into a 24/72 schedule. We have 8 stations and run 9 ALS units, 2 QRV's, and 4 12-Hour units. Our annual call volume runs over 20,300 calls. We offer State benefits including state retirement.

Summary
Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) provides high-quality prehospital care and safe transportation to the sick and injured in accordance with South Carolina DPH protocols, Lancaster County EMS Protocols and Policies and National Registry certification. AEMT are crucial healthcare professionals who provide immediate care to patients during emergency situations. AEMTs often work in high-pressure and unpredictable environments.

Typical Qualifications
Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to 911 calls and provide basic and limited ALS interventions to patients
  • Perform patient assessments and determine appropriate treatment pathways
    Assess patient condition and determine appropriate treatment based on Lancaster County EMS and SC State protocols
  • Perform patient assessments and determine appropriate treatment pathways
  • Administer approved medications per Lancaster County and SC AEMT protocols
    Establish IV/IO access for fluid and medication administration
  • Assist paramedics with ALS procedures outside the AEMT scope
  • Safely operate emergency vehicles according to Lancaster County EMS, state and local regulations.
  • CEVO/EVOC Certification
  • Document patient assessments using ESO, including treatments, and transport information in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assist paramedics with advanced life support (ALS) procedures within the EMT scope of practice
  • Maintain cleanliness, readiness, and inventory of the ambulance and equipment
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, hospitals, and other first responders
  • Provide compassionate, professional patient care during high-stress situations
  • Participate in required training, continuing education, and quality improvement activities

Qualifications:
  • Current South Carolina AEMT certification
  • Current National Registry AEMT (NREMT)
  • Strong knowledge of SC EMS protocols and AEMT scope of practice
  • Valid SC driver's license and acceptable 10-year driving record
  • CPR/BLS AHA certification
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work rotating shifts of 24/48 including weekends and holidays
  • Criminal Background Check Required
  • CEVO/EVOC certification
  • NIMS and Hazmat

Physical demands:
  • Required heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, stooping, crawling, etc.
  • Long and irregular hours: 24-hour shifts or longer, work overtime, weekends and holidays, disrupted sleep and eating patterns. Ability to lift and move patients/equipment (commonly 100+ lbs with assistance)
  • Exposure to infectious diseases: exposure to infectious diseases in the course of duty
  • Fast-paced, high stress situations/environment
  • Exposure to illness, trauma and hazardous situations as well as all weather types
