General Description
SUNY Niagara's Division of Workforce Development is seeking a part time instructor to teach a Sterile Processing Technician course. The course will run with 88 hours of instruction for participants. It includes both a classroom session (64 hours) and a small group clinical portion (24 hours) running multiple times. This session generally runs weekends and/or evenings (after 5 p.m.) to accommodate working participants. The exact course days and times will be negotiated upon hire.
This position is responsible for cultivating the department's mission and objectives through student instruction, curricular design, and practical knowledge in order to ensure the successful program and personal development of each student. The instructor will utilize their educational and professional experience to foster a student-centered classroom environment that cultivates student engagement growth, and career readiness after the completion of the program.
Typical Work Activities
  • Provide the Workforce Development supervisor with active input in course development, including course descriptions, course syllabus, textbook recommendations, and/or equipment review.
  • Creation and revision of weekly lesson plans.
  • Responsible for comprehensive course instruction within specific program areas.
  • Responsible for accurate record keeping of student attendance and academic progress
  • Correct and return graded assignments within 88 hours to students or to Workforce Development.
  • Prepare students for the Certification Exam (CBSPD).
  • Submit course materials, student attendance, and bi-weekly time sheets on time.
  • Establish and maintain a relationship with a healthcare facility where clinical demonstration and practice of sterile processing techniques will take place.
  • Build relationships with other healthcare facilities so as to promote and place recent graduates in Sterile Processing Technician jobs.
  • Other duties assigned by Supervisor.

Essential Functions
Ability to work with, relate to and train a diverse population. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to develop, prepare and present information. Must be able to read, understand and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form. Must able to operate computers. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience.
  • Certified as a Sterile Processing Technician with certification obtained from either National Certification Board CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
  • Possess basic knowledge of ZOOM, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with the clinical training of Sterile Processing Technicians.
  • Experience with in-person and Remote teaching experience at the post-secondary level, or equivalent private industry experience is a plus.

License(s)/Certifications
Certified Sterile Processing Technician obtained from either National Certification Board CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
