Registered Nurse in Pain Management
Part Time
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN), Pain Management assesses, plans, implements, and coordinates care for the patient in the special procedure rooms. This position is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes through implementation of critical pathways.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional hospital environment.
  • Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
  • Prepare pre-procedure for patient admission according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ensure patient meets admit requirements before patient has a procedure.
  • Review patients' medical histories, home medications, allergies and diagnostic tests.
  • Assist physicians and nursing teams during the implementation of treatments.
  • Recognize emergency situations, respond quickly and efficiently following policy and procedure, ACLS, physician orders or emergency plan to prevent adverse patient outcomes.
  • Perform appropriate nursing duties during procedures that pertain to pain management using current nursing standards as well as hospital standards.
  • Assess and document patients' response to treatment.
  • Document that assessments, interventions and patient outcomes are performed according to policy and procedure and hospital standards.
  • Complete all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
  • Utilize a pain assessment tool to evaluate patients' pain level.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of drug usage, their actions and side effects, interaction with anesthesia agents and expected patient outcomes.
  • Administer medication using the 5 rights per physician orders. Document given medications appropriately.
  • Monitor patients who have received conscious sedation per hospital policy.
  • Maintain knowledge of medications, expected patient outcomes post-procedure/recovery, and anticipated complications.
  • Restock supplies/equipment in assigned work area to maintain adequate levels for patient care.
  • Rotates supplies/medications minimize outdates.
  • Provide verbal education and written instruction to patient and family or responsible party regarding the procedure experience, discharge instructions, and physician specific home care.
  • Educate patient and their family or responsible party on pain relief options
  • Demonstrates compassion for patients who are suffering from pain.
  • Maintain knowledge and adhere to policies/procedure, care standards for pain management.
  • Participate in committees and contribute to quality improvement process.
  • Demonstrate the importance of continuing education to the performance of hospital responsibilities and growth in profession.
  • Demonstrate continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Adhere to established hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Demonstrate the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follow procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
  • Actively protect patients and self by following OSHA and other standards reviewed in annual training.
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.

Non-Essential Functions
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Actively supports and upholds the mission and core values of the Hospital.
  • Remains knowledgeable of and follows the policies of the Hospital.
  • Always maintains patient and hospital confidentiality.
  • Keeps Manager apprised of day-to-day situations.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Ability
  • Associate's degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing. BSN desired.
  • Possession of valid state license as Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required. (NOTE: BCLS may be obtained individually or will be accepted without individual BCLS card with current ACLS documentation.)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of one-year experience in Pain Management, PACU, Emergency or ICU.
  • Proficiency with IV placement preferred.

Environmental and Physical Requirements
The employee works in a temperature-controlled environment. Employees should be able to lift 50 pounds using proper lifting technique several times during their shift. Candidate must be able to read, write and speak English fluently, have cognitive skills for math, reading, filing and sterile technique skills. Communication skills to deal well with employees, patients, families and physicians. Vision for near, far & mid-range accommodation. Hearing for low, medium, and high pitch. Job requires physical ability for long-term standing, occasional sitting, crouching, kneeling, frequent walking, reaching with reaching above head and below waist. Job risks include exposure to blood and body fluids (high), contact with chemicals, and exposure to infectious disease.
