Part Time Automotive Controller information

What is a part time automotive controller?

A Part Time Automotive Controller is a finance professional responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial operations of an automotive dealership on a part-time basis. Their main duties include managing financial statements, budgets, payroll, and compliance with accounting standards. They also help ensure accurate bookkeeping, monitor expenses, and may assist in financial planning or audits. Working part-time, they provide essential financial oversight while allowing flexibility for both the employer and the employee. This role is crucial for dealerships that need expert financial management but do not require a full-time controller.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time automotive controller?

To thrive as a Part Time Automotive Controller, you need solid knowledge of accounting principles, dealership financial operations, and relevant experience—often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), such as Reynolds & Reynolds or CDK Global, and proficiency in Excel are typically required. Attention to detail, integrity, and strong organizational skills are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective support of dealership profitability, even within a part-time schedule.

How does a part time automotive controller balance financial oversight with limited hours, and what are typical expectations for availability?

As a part-time Automotive Controller, you are expected to maintain robust financial controls and ensure timely reporting, despite working reduced hours. This often means prioritizing critical tasks such as month-end closings, compliance checks, and budget reviews, while leveraging strong organizational skills and effective communication with dealership management. You'll typically collaborate closely with accounting staff and department heads, and may have set days or flexible hours depending on the dealership's needs. Clear expectations around response times and deliverables are essential, so proactive communication is key to success in this role.
