What is a part time attorney?

A part time attorney is a licensed lawyer who works fewer hours than a full-time attorney, often with a flexible schedule. They may handle specific cases, work on a contract basis, or provide legal services to clients while balancing other commitments. Part time attorneys can work for law firms, corporations, government agencies, or as solo practitioners. This arrangement is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or pursuing other interests alongside their legal career.

How do part-time attorneys typically balance client expectations with reduced hours?

Part-time attorneys often manage client expectations by clearly communicating their availability and setting realistic timelines for deliverables. They may prioritize tasks, delegate certain responsibilities, and utilize technology to stay organized and responsive. Collaboration with full-time colleagues is common, ensuring that client matters progress smoothly even when the part-time attorney is not in the office. This structure allows for effective workload management while maintaining high-quality legal service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and strong legal research and writing skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and case management software is often necessary. Excellent time management, communication, and client-relations skills help maximize productivity in a flexible or reduced-hour schedule. These abilities ensure effective legal representation, compliance with professional standards, and the ability to deliver quality service despite limited hours.

Job description

Description
Contract Family Attorney - Fully Remote in Washington (10-20 Hours/Week)
No one wins in divorce court. Call a Truce.
Stop scrolling if you are a skilled Washington family law attorney looking for a meaningful, high-impact contract opportunity that prioritizes collaboration, client well-being, and flexibility.
If you're committed to a healthier, part-time way to practice, Truce Law is the place for you. We are a fully remote firm operating within Washington state and are seeking an experienced attorney for a consistent, flexible, part-time role.
Why Attorneys Contract with Truce Law (Compensation & Flexibility)
We are looking for a dedicated contractor to provide high-quality legal support on a flexible, part-time basis.
  • Contract Rate: $150 per billed hour.
  • Target Hours: 10-20 hours per week, offering excellent flexibility for your existing schedule.
  • Fully Remote: Practice from anywhere within Washington state.
  • Support: Access to firm-provided systems and support staff (paralegals, legal assistants, billing team) to ensure efficiency and focus on legal work.
  • Collaboration: Join a supportive team of experienced attorneys dedicated to collaborative strategy and reducing conflict.

Note: As this is a contract position, the attorney will not receive firm benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, or 401(k) contributions.
Our "Truce Mindset" in Practice
Our "Truce Mindset" guides every role at Truce Law. It means we consistently prioritize long-term relational health and sustainable efficiency over short-term gratification or conflict. For a contract attorney, this commitment means focusing your limited, high-value time on work that promotes resolution:
  • Foresight over Expedience: You help clients redirect their focus toward long-term peace and co-parenting stability, ensuring the legal strategy is truly aligned with firm values and reduces conflict down the line.
  • Constructive Communication: You focus on preserving dignity-even when dealing with difficult facts-by ensuring all communication is professional and centered on legal solutions, leading to smoother negotiations and better client outcomes.
  • Prioritizing Sustainable Health: You leverage the support staff by proactively and effectively delegating research, drafting, and administrative tasks to the paralegal and legal assistant working alongside you, maximizing the capacity of the entire legal pod.

Responsibilities
What Outcomes You Will Achieve: Champion Collaboration
Your role centers on applying your expertise to guide clients through thoughtful, conflict-reducing solutions, backed by a strong support team, within your contracted hours.
โ€ข Lead with Negotiation: Develop thoughtful strategies to meet client goals, prioritizing negotiation and settlement to achieve stable futures.
โ€ข Conflict-Reduction: Actively pursue and implement collaborative solutions, minimizing the need for adversarial court proceedings.
โ€ข Advocate Responsibly: Represent clients in court when necessary, maintaining the firm's commitment to respect and long-term resolution.
โ€ข High-Quality Output: Review and finalize all legal documentation (pleadings, motions, agreements, judgments, and orders) efficiently.
โ€ข Mentorship & Support: Work closely and collaboratively with other firm attorneys and the assigned support team (paralegal and legal assistant) on case strategy and execution.
Qualifications
Who We're Looking For: The Collaborative Advocate
You are a contract professional committed to both excellence and empathy who can manage your time and workload effectively within a flexible structure.
โ€ข Experience & Licensure: Current Washington State Bar license with 5+ years of family law experience.
โ€ข The Truce Mindset: Demonstrably collaborative, growth-minded, and empathetic approach to law and colleagues.
โ€ข Communication Mastery: Strong communication, organizational, and truly client-centered skills.
โ€ข Independence & Reliability: Proven ability to manage a part-time workload, meet deadlines, and work independently in a remote environment while maintaining consistent communication.
โ€ข Team Focused: Motivated to advocate for clients' best long-term interests while valuing teamwork and professional development.
