OnCall:ย None routinely; may be required during public health events
Travel:ย 10โ€“20% in-state; limited out-of-state opportunities

About the Program

The Healthcare Epidemiology Program works toย eliminate Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs)ย andย combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AR)ย in Maine through surveillance, outbreak response, and partnership with federal, state, and local healthcare stakeholders. This role directly supports statewide efforts to reduce AR, improve antimicrobial stewardship, and strengthen public health preparedness.


Position Summary

Theย Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) Specialistย will provide expert support in analyzing antimicrobial utilization and resistance data, advancing antimicrobial stewardship performance across healthcare facilities, and improving statewide AR reduction initiatives. This role includes evaluating AR data sources, leading performance improvement efforts, engaging healthcare leaders, and supporting educational outreach and statewide AR campaigns.


Key Responsibilities
  • Identify, access, and evaluate AR datasets (e.g., NHSN AU/AR, Medicare Part D, CDC Patient Safety Atlas, All-Payer Claims Data).
  • Lead statewide antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) performance improvement initiatives across healthcare facility types.
  • Collaborate with hospitals, nursing homes, and other partners to increase adherence to AMS core elements.
  • Develop AR/AMS educational materials for frontline healthcare workers and the public.
  • Support annual Antibiotics Awareness Week activities, including social media, educational content, and presentations.
  • Engage healthcare facility leadership to discuss AMS strategies and AR reduction opportunities.
  • Use data to identify priority areas and determine baseline and success metrics for AR reduction activities.
  • Partner with Infection Preventionists on onsite or virtual assessments of facility antimicrobial practices.
  • Chair or co-chair state AR/AMS workgroups.
  • Submit weekly activity reports and monthly progress reports (as applicable).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Pharmacist credential (RPh or PharmD).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experienceย as a clinical, retail, or consulting pharmacist.
  • Experience analyzing antibiotic utilization (AU) data across various data sets.
  • Proven ability to lead statewide or large-scale antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Skilled in hosting and managing virtual meetings (Teams, Zoom).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to simplify complex scientific concepts for varied audiences.
  • Strong analytical, prioritization, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and reliable transportation (required for instate travel).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate training in Antimicrobial Stewardship (SIDP, MAD-ID, etc.).
  • Experience with environmental or public healthโ€“related AR/AMS initiatives.
  • Experience engaging healthcare leadership and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated success preparing performance reports and data-driven insights.

Schedule & Work Expectations
  • Part-time - less than 30 hours per week
  • Hybrid remote eligibility (within Maine) with access to a local public health office.
  • Occasional overtime only during public health responses.
