What is a part time air attack pilot?

Part Time Air Attack Pilots are specialized pilots who operate aircraft for wildfire suppression and management on a part-time basis. They coordinate aerial firefighting operations by directing air tankers, helicopters, and ground resources to effectively combat wildfires. These pilots work closely with fire agencies, often during peak fire seasons, and must have advanced flying skills and knowledge of fire behavior. Their schedules can be irregular, depending on fire activity and agency needs. Many Part Time Air Attack Pilots have previous experience as full-time pilots or in other aviation roles.

Part-time Air Attack Pilots often face the challenge of adapting quickly to rapidly changing wildfire conditions and unpredictable schedules, especially during peak fire season. They must remain proficient with varying aircraft, maintain readiness despite intermittent flying, and integrate seamlessly with ground and aerial firefighting teams. Effective communication and situational awareness are critical, as they typically coordinate air operations over complex terrain under stressful conditions. Additionally, balancing part-time flying with other commitments can require strong time management and flexibility.
