General Work DescriptionParamedic: $24.24/HR (Grade 66) Advanced EMT: $21.24/HR (Grade 63) EMT Basic: $19.45/HR (Grade 61) EMT Trainee: $18.48/HRBeaufort County Emergency Medical Services will be conducting interviews for part-time Paramedics and/or part-time Advanced EMT -classification contingent upon the applicant's current certification.
Performs appropriate level life support work in the Emergency Medical Services program. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency applying necessary medical treatment of sick or injured persons and transporting persons to a medical facility. Work includes participating in community outreach education and prevention programs, preparation of vehicles, cleaning of vehicles, building and grounds, participating in continuous in-service training and providing assistance to members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations as requested. Special working conditions: Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases, thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for blood borne pathogens.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesA successful person in this position must respond to emergency calls, providing basic and advanced life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to the appropriate medical facility; function at the Paramedic level, abide by the Beaufort County government safety standards and regulations.
A certified Paramedic performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols and standards established by the EMS System and Medical Directors; administer approved medications via approved access routes, administer specified solutions by vascular access infusion, perform pulmonary ventilations and obtains 12-lead EKG's for cardiac diagnostics; perform patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with established protocol, including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine, treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold, treatment of burns, lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility.
QualificationsPhysical Requirements: This work requires the ability to perform very heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This work regularly requires speaking and hearing, frequently requires standing, sitting using hands to finger, handle or feel, lifting independently in excess of 125 pounds (or combined weight of 250 pounds), repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, smelling and pushing and/or pulling.
Education, Training, and Experience: Graduation from high school and moderate experience in advanced emergency medical service, work as an Paramedic, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services certification as a Paramedic.
EMT Advanced / Basic: Equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant must currently be certified as an EMT Basic and enrolled in an EMT Advanced or higher certification class with the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months.
Special Requirements: NC EMT Basic or NC Advanced EMT and/or NC Paramedic. Certification by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic; Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support certification or acceptable equivalent, CPR Certification; Completion of NIMS 100, 200, and 700, and possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Please refer to Title 21, Sub Chapter 32H, Section .0501 of the North Carolina Administrative Code for specific certification requirements.
