What does a part time actuarial science faculty member do?

Their duties typically include developing lesson plans, delivering lectures, grading assignments and exams, and advising students. They may also contribute to curriculum development and stay current with trends in actuarial science. Unlike full-time faculty, part-time faculty usually have a lighter teaching load and may not participate in research or administrative duties.

Part-time Actuarial Science faculty often balance teaching responsibilities with other professional commitments, which can make time management a significant challenge. They may also need to quickly adapt to the institution’s curriculum and integrate with full-time faculty and students, sometimes with limited access to on-campus resources. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to establish clear communication with department staff, utilize available teaching support tools, and actively participate in department meetings and online forums. Building connections with students and colleagues can also foster a supportive work environment and enhance the teaching experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time actuarial science faculty, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Actuarial Science Faculty, you need advanced knowledge in actuarial science, mathematics, and statistics, typically supported by a graduate degree and relevant actuarial exams. Familiarity with actuarial software, statistical analysis tools like R or SAS, and experience with online learning platforms are commonly required. These skills ensure that faculty can deliver rigorous, relevant education while supporting diverse learners’ success.

Job description

Spend your spring semester exploring healthcare actuarial work and building the foundational skills needed to grow as a modern actuary. The Cigna Group's Actuarial Executive Development Program (AEDP) offers a unique part-time actuarial internship for students earlier in their actuarial career journey. The experience is designed to complement an academic schedule while helping students prepare for the depth, pace, and expectations of a future summer internship.

Throughout the spring, interns will gain guided exposure to how actuaries use data to solve healthcare business problems and support important decisions. You'll contribute to a meaningful project, strengthen your analytical and professional skills, learn how tools such as AI and advanced analytics are used in practice, and build relationships with experienced actuaries. The focus is on exploration, learning, and readiness for a broader summer internship experience-not simply completing a short-term healthcare experience.

This part-time experience is intentionally designed as a steppingstone toward the AEDP summer internship the following year, which remains our primary and more comprehensive pathway for developing actuarial talent. Successful participation may position students for consideration for a future summer opportunity, but the spring internship does not replace the summer internship or guarantee selection.

What spring interns do: With guidance, training, and support from experienced actuaries, explore healthcare actuarial work through a meaningful project. Projects may include:

- Learning how healthcare data can help explain costs and financial trends

- Exploring how data is used to understand healthcare programs and policies

- Supporting introductory analyses related to pricing, forecasting, or reserving

- Building or improving tools that help teams organize information and make decisions

Beyond the project, spring interns have an opportunity to:

  • Develop business acumen through job shadows, leadership lunches, and trainings to deepen their understanding of actuarial work at The Cigna Group.

  • Build skills focused on professional development through mentorship, career coaching, and hands-on experiences to build your actuarial toolkit.

  • Join a community of AEDP associates, actuarial professionals and leaders focused on connection and growth.

Qualifications:

  • Student attending a university on the SOA listing of Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs (UCAP), progressing toward a bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or a related major. Sophomores or students who have completed at least 2 semesters of relevant coursework, preferred.

  • Student required to be on-site two days a week at our office in Bloomfield, Connecticut (days/hours flexible to school class schedule)

  • Minimum 3.2 GPA

  • Proficient in working with data and modern analytical tools, including strong Excel skills, exposure to Python, R, SQL, AI-enabled tools, or other emerging technologies, is a plus

  • Communicates clearly, collaborates effectively, and works well across teams by listening actively and contributing thoughtfully.

  • Shows early leadership potential by taking ownership, thinking strategically, embracing innovation, and influencing outcomes in changing or ambiguous environments.

  • Completion of at least one actuarial exam, preferred

Program Logistics:

Location: Cottage Grove Road, Bloomfield, CT

Work Schedule: January 19 - April 30, 2027

Part-time: 15 hours/week typical, flexible between 10-20 hours/week based on class schedule

Hybrid: Two days in-office per week (days/hours flexible to class schedule), remainder remote

Compensation: Hourly rate starting at $28.00

Transportation assistance for in-office days

Paid study materials for one upcoming actuarial exam

Work Authorization: One goal of this internship program is to prepare and identify qualified candidates for roles with Cigna post-graduation. Therefore, this temporary internship is open only to individuals who are eligible for employment in the United States and who would not require visa support including H-1B, CPT/OPT/STEM, etc., now or in the future.
