To thrive as a Part Time Accounting professional, you need a solid understanding of basic accounting principles, proficiency in bookkeeping, and often an associate’s degree or relevant coursework in accounting. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and possibly experience with ERP systems is highly valuable. Attention to detail, time management, and strong organizational skills help individuals excel in balancing multiple clients or tasks within limited hours. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial records, effective workflow, and compliance with reporting standards, which are crucial for supporting business operations.

What is the difference between Part Time Accounting vs Bookkeeping?

AspectPart Time AccountingBookkeeping

What is a part time accounting job?

A part time accounting job involves performing accounting tasks, such as bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, managing invoices, and reconciling accounts, but on a reduced schedule compared to a full-time role. These positions are ideal for individuals seeking flexibility, such as students, parents, or those supplementing other work. Part time accountants may work for businesses, accounting firms, or as independent contractors, and their responsibilities can vary depending on the employer's needs.

How does a part-time accounting role typically integrate with full-time accounting staff and broader finance teams?

Part-time accountants usually work closely with full-time staff by focusing on specific tasks such as reconciliations, data entry, or assisting with month-end closings. They often coordinate with full-time accountants to ensure consistency and accuracy in financial records, and may attend regular team meetings to stay aligned on priorities. Communication is key, as part-time team members need to stay updated on ongoing projects and deadlines. While their schedules are more flexible, part-time accountants are expected to maintain high standards of organization and responsiveness to support the overall finance team’s objectives.

The Assistant Business Manager for BYU's Neuroscience Center plays a uniquely impactful role at the intersection of science, education, and stewardship, helping power a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that serves hundreds of students and faculty across campus. What makes this position especially exciting is its breadth: from guiding financial strategy and supporting cutting-edge research resources to shaping course offerings and enhancing the student experience, this role is central to how the Center operates and grows. By ensuring thoughtful use of resources, smooth academic coordination, and strong collaboration among departments, the Assistant Business Manager directly advances BYU's mission to foster learning, faith, and service-enabling students and faculty to pursue meaningful discovery in neuroscience while contributing to a well-functioning, values-driven academic community.

  • Oversee purchasing, procurement, payroll, and financial transactions for equipment, supplies, student wages, and other operational needs.
  • Coordinate undergraduate and graduate course scheduling to support effective instruction, classroom use, and student access.
  • Serve as the main liaison among the Center, faculty, affiliated departments, and the college to keep communication and operations running smoothly.
  • Support student employment, faculty/administrative logistics, and operational reporting, including hiring, onboarding, scholarships, events, and strategic data needs.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience managing budgets, financial transactions, and administrative processes.
  • Experience using business and financial management systems and software.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, financial management, payroll, purchasing, and administrative operations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and enterprise business systems.

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education, academic administration, or research support environments.
  • Experience with budget development, financial forecasting, and fiscal reporting.
  • Experience coordinating academic schedules and supporting faculty and student programs.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience with Workday or similar ERP systems.
  • Experience managing student employment, payroll, and procurement processes.
  • Knowledge of higher education administrative, financial, and academic operations.
  • Ability to improve processes and operational efficiency.
