What is a part time 3rd shift?

Part time 3rd shift jobs are positions that require employees to work overnight hours, typically starting late in the evening and ending early in the morning, but on a part-time basis (usually less than 35 hours per week). These jobs are common in industries that operate 24/7, such as healthcare, manufacturing, security, and hospitality. Working the 3rd shift can offer flexibility for those who have daytime commitments or prefer nighttime hours. However, it may require adjusting your sleep schedule and managing work-life balance differently compared to traditional shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time 3rd shift worker?

To thrive as a Part Time 3rd Shift Worker, you generally need reliability, time management, and the ability to work independently, with a high school diploma or equivalent often required. Familiarity with scheduling software, communication tools, and any job-specific machinery or systems is typically important. Strong self-motivation, adaptability, and effective communication help individuals excel during non-traditional hours when supervision may be limited. These skills ensure productivity, safety, and smooth operations during overnight shifts when support resources may be reduced.

To manage these challenges, it’s helpful to establish a consistent sleep routine, prioritize self-care, and communicate openly with your manager about scheduling needs. Many organizations also foster a supportive team environment during night shifts, which can help with morale and teamwork.

Job description

Job Title: Clinical Laboratory ScientistJob Description

This part-time Clinical Laboratory Scientist role focuses on performing the full pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of clinical laboratory testing with speed and accuracy in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment. You will analyze and interpret test results for a diverse patient population, including pediatric, neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, and report findings to the appropriate providers or locations. The role requires strict adherence to quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance protocols, as well as effective use of laboratory computer systems and ongoing compliance with state-mandated educational requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of all authorized clinical laboratory tests in accordance with California State Business and Professions Code and departmental procedures.
  • Analyze test results for pediatric, neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, ensuring appropriate interpretation based on patient population.
  • Review, verify, and accurately report test results to the appropriate provider or designated location within required timeframes.
  • Verify all test sample requirements prior to testing, including correct labeling, appropriate tube containers, and specimen integrity.
  • Perform all test procedures as outlined in the department’s procedure manuals across all benches, including blood bank, hematology, and chemistry.
  • Cross-check test results for appropriate correlations and ensure accuracy before reporting.
  • Perform and record instrument preventive maintenance procedures, following daily, weekly, and monthly schedules as defined by department protocols.
  • Document all maintenance activities, quality control data, and testing information on department log sheets, worksheets, printouts, and other required records.
  • Perform and record quality control results as determined by established protocols, and take appropriate troubleshooting steps when QC results fail.
  • Troubleshoot analyzers and laboratory instruments when error codes or issues arise, including investigating root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Utilize laboratory computer systems to enter, retrieve, and report patient and test data accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform proficiency testing, inter-laboratory comparison tests, and competency assessments as required by regulatory and departmental standards.
  • Complete special assignments and projects in a timely manner, delivering accurate and reliable results.
  • Manage workload effectively to complete all assigned procedures during the scheduled work shift, using time productively in a high-volume environment.
  • Maintain required yearly educational and licensing requirements as determined by state regulations and laboratory policies.
  • Collaborate with fellow Clinical Laboratory Scientists, lab assistants, and bench leads to ensure smooth workflow and high-quality patient care during night and weekend shifts.
Essential Skills
  • Active National Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of CLS experience within a hospital setting, preferably in a fast-paced, large acute care hospital rather than a community hospital.
  • Strong blood bank experience, including antibody identification and routine blood banking procedures.
  • Hematology experience with the ability to perform and interpret a wide range of hematology tests.
  • Chemistry experience with demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and maintain chemistry analyzers and related equipment.
  • Proficiency in clinical laboratory testing across multiple benches, including blood bank, hematology, and chemistry.
  • Ability to perform and interpret quality control procedures and take appropriate troubleshooting steps when QC fails.
  • Ability to troubleshoot analyzer error codes and implement corrective actions to restore proper function.
  • Competence in using laboratory computer systems for data entry, result reporting, and information retrieval.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen verification, labeling, documentation, and result reporting.
  • Ability and willingness to work rotating weekends and graveyard shifts as part of the regular schedule.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in an acute care hospital environment with high test volumes and fast turnaround expectations.
  • Comfort working on all laboratory benches, including blood bank, hematology, and chemistry, during night shifts.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stress and maintain accuracy in a busy clinical setting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities for handling QC issues, instrument errors, and complex cases.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with colleagues and conveying results to providers.
  • Adaptability to a structured training program that transitions from day shift to evening and then graveyard shift.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and compliance with state-determined educational requirements.
Work Environment

This is a part-time graveyard shift position in an acute care hospital laboratory. The regular schedule includes every Friday night and every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday), with shift hours from approximately 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM. The role is a registry position that provides coverage for leaves of absence, vacations, and last-minute call-offs, offering exposure to a variety of clinical situations. You will work alongside three other Clinical Laboratory Scientists and 2–3 lab assistants, with a lead on the bench to support workflow and decision-making. The night shift culture is described as very helpful and knowledgeable, with staff supporting one another in a setting that can be stressful at times but often has less specialty work than daytime hours. Most complex and specialty testing occurs during the day, while nights focus on general laboratory work, supporting patient admissions at night and discharges during the day. The training program includes three weeks of structured onboarding: Week 1 on day shift focusing on blood bank (Monday–Friday, approximately 6:30 AM–3:00 PM), Week 2 on evening shift focusing on hematology (Monday–Friday, starting around 2:30 PM), and Week 3 transitioning to the graveyard shift. The environment uses standard clinical laboratory instruments and computer systems, with an emphasis on quality control, preventive maintenance, and accurate documentation in a high-volume, acute care setting.
