Part Time 3D Modeling Jobs in Alberta (NOW HIRING)

Part Time 3D Modeling information

What is part time 3D modeling?

Part time 3D modeling jobs involve creating three-dimensional digital models using specialized software, but on a reduced or flexible schedule compared to full-time roles. These jobs are often found in industries like video games, animation, architecture, product design, and advertising. Part time 3D modelers may work on specific projects, freelance assignments, or provide support to teams needing extra modeling capacity. The work can be done remotely or on-site, depending on the employer and project requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a part time 3D modeler?

To thrive as a Part Time 3D Modeler, you need strong spatial awareness, proficiency in 3D modeling techniques, and a solid portfolio, often supported by formal education or relevant courses in design or animation. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max is typically required, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients or team members are highly valued soft skills. These skills ensure accurate, visually compelling models that meet project specifications and deadlines in a competitive, collaborative environment.

What are common challenges faced by part time 3D modelers, and how can they be managed?

Part-time 3D modelers often face challenges related to tight deadlines and limited project hours, which can make time management crucial. Balancing multiple projects or clients may also require strong communication skills to clarify expectations and ensure deliverables meet quality standards. Working remotely or as a freelancer, which is common in this role, means staying updated on the latest software and industry trends independently. Building a strong portfolio and maintaining clear, consistent communication with clients or team members can help manage these challenges and support career growth.

Our vision is simple: we are passionate about creating a cleaner, sustainable future for everyone. We believe that together we can create a path to net-zero, create clean power for the communities we serve, and have fun in the process.

Position Details

  • Position Type: Contract.
  • Hours: Part-time, nominally 20 hours per week, with the potential to increase in hours and/or convert to a full-time position based on workload.
  • Work Environment: Hybrid, with an expectation to work from our office 2-3 days per week

Questor is looking for an intermediate Mechanical Drafter to support the design and manufacturing of our existing incinerator product line and the development of our new product lines. Must have strong drawing skills in SolidWorks, along with basic knowledge and use of AutoCAD. You will produce and maintain the manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication drawings that bring our equipment to life, working closely with our engineering team in a collaborative setting. This is a contract position, and the role reports to the Director of Engineering.

Success in this role is defined as someone who partners effectively with the Engineering and Operations Team, is detail-oriented, organized, effective at prioritizing, able to manage multiple deliverables, and produces accurate, high-quality drawings with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, with a desire to continually learn, grow, and contribute to the team.

Your Unique Skills

  • Strong, hands-on SolidWorks skills; you produce clean, accurate, and well-organized 3D models and 2D drawings, and you take pride in the craft of drafting.
  • Experience with AutoCAD in creating P&IDs and wiring diagrams.
  • Detail-oriented and pragmatic; you are able to independently prioritize, organize, and manage multiple drawing packages and revisions.
  • A collaborative team player with a can-do attitude that holds themselves to the high standards of quality and accountability Questor expects.
  • Quick to adapt to new circumstances, with the initiative to work through ambiguity and ask the right questions.
  • Comfortable working independently within a part-time, hybrid arrangement while staying closely coordinated with the engineering team.
  • Professional communicator who exercises discretion with confidential information.

What You'll Do

  • Produce manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly drawings in SolidWorks based on engineering direction, sketches, and markups.
  • Create and maintain 3D models, 2D detail and general arrangement drawings, and bills of material (BOMs) for incinerators and related equipment.
  • Revise and update existing models and drawings to reflect design changes, redlines, and continuous-improvement updates.
  • Apply appropriate dimensioning, tolerancing (GD&T & ASME), and drafting standards so drawings are clear and ready for fabrication.
  • Manage drawing files, revision control, and documentation in an organized and consistent manner.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering, Operations, and Manufacturing teams to ensure drawings are accurate and practical to build, assemble, and install.
  • Support the preparation of equipment specifications, datasheets, and fabrication packages.
  • Incorporate feedback from design reviews and drawing checks and flag discrepancies or constructability concerns for engineering review.

What You Bring

Required

  • Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, 3-D Modeling, AutoCAD/CADD, or a related discipline.
  • 3-6 years of relevant mechanical drafting experience.
  • Strong, demonstrated proficiency with SolidWorks (3D modeling and 2D drawing production).
  • Solid understanding of drafting standards, dimensioning, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T & AMSE).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent drawing packages and revisions.

Assets

  • Experience drafting for fabrication, weldments, sheet metal, and/or pressure equipment.
  • Familiarity with oil & gas, energy, or industrial equipment manufacturing.
